Anyone ever owned a steel?
What is best, what are some good tips and tricks for new people?
Is it worth it to buy into copper, what size should people buy, what extras do people need.
Thanks in advance to anyone who contributes.

I've always wanted to distill stuff but I'm too scared of drinking methanol and going blind.

That is a big part of the reason I started the thread.
The other is i dont want to be 200-400 buck invested and find out I bought shit gear.

A 5 gallon copper pot still is fine and simple for most purposes, and unlike the pic in your OP, you don't need a copper thumper or condenser, so that will save you some costs.

There's a couple distilling forums on the web, so check those out. Check your state laws too, because owning a still isn't illegal in some states, but it may be in others, and you may need to pay for licenses and shit.

These days distilling is straight forward math, so if you do the math properly, it's pretty fucking simple, as distilling is chemistry, and chemistry abides by laws that you can measure and quantify.

Just make sure you get a still that has been made with the right solder, which means doing it yourself and avoiding anything made by the Chinks, as they don't give a fuck about safety.

you can freeze distill which is a little more legal and cheaper to do
the taste will turn out sweeter, richer, and stronger than the original, but at the same time aplify the off tastes

A trick is to make a paste out of flour to help plug up leaks. Easily looked up. Just cut the head late and the tail early if youre worried about poisoning.

Very time and energy consuming. Not really worth it on a small scale. Going blind isn't that much of a problem when you work correctly and choose the right ingredients. Also never use baking yeast it tastes horrible.

Good luck. It's not much cheaper unless you own a huge orchard or something, and it's dangerous as fuck.

Isn't that dangerous because you still end up with a lot of concentrated contaminants?

Show the law bro. You can have Limmited amounts made for home use.
Also you can buy steels of amazon im sure it aint a fediral crime to own them.
Lastly what the government dont know cant hurt them.

The reason I want one is because I have talked to a lot of vets who served in places with poor or collapsed economies, they said the dudes who could make alcohol always did ok.

i'd say turbo yeast is the worst, baking yeast can be good if you don't let it run dry. trying to get a high % by fermentation is what makes the bad flavors, you will get a yeasty flavor but if you triple distilled in a pot still and filter it and then just let it sit for a year so it settles out you will have the best you'll ever have

Nah, I'd ask you guys for help if I were going to distill alcohol, its not like you guys would make me make nerve gas and I'd go blind or something.

I make rum and essential oils, infused alcohol. This year I bought a cider press to make applejack but didnt have the time. So Ill probably use it for a trial batch of whiskey. Ive tried before but without a press it was to much of a hassle to squeeze the liquid out of the grains or corn mash.
Its a stainless steel pot still with a thumper that I also use for extractions.

it's very hard to even make enough methanol to go blind or die when home distilling unless you have a fucking enormous still. if you actually discard the proper portions of it, you'll be perfectly fine. and if youre really paranoid you can test it for methanol.

buy some of this to sterilize so you don't get funky shit growing in your mash and make damn sure whoever built your still didn't use lead solder also make sure it's food grade copper
copper is also important because it neutralizes sulfurs

>> No.17022696

>>17022597
This is not as important when distilling. Most of those unpleasant flavours dont make it out of the mash.
