That's what bothers me about him. Coffee shouldn't be inclusive. Making coffee inclusive is how you end up with retards like the SGP poster, "grinders should only cost $20 at most" poster, and the "how do I make espresso with a $200 budget" posters destroying the hobby.

Got a Hario Switch, and after a bit of adjustment on grind size, made a really nice cup of coffee with it today. Based on some stuff I've seen online, during the immersion phase I add water, then the coffee, with stirring at the beginning and fifteen seconds before the drawdown. This produces the bed scene in the attached picture, which is sort of dome-like rather than the flat bed that sources say is optimal. Does this normal standard still apply when you're adding coffee after water? The coffee tasted good, but I'm wondering if I could could make it even better.

Curious how often you choose one over the other when you brew. Is it purely situational to how big of a brew you want to make? I have just an 02 v60 but rarely make a brew using more than 20-25g of beans. I imagine I would get better results with the 01 but the hassle of having two of the same brewer and buying different size papers seems like it would not be worth it.

Auto drip makers are a heating element, a nozzle, and a few thermocouples. Technivorms come at a premium because they're hand assembled and tested + use a copper element instead of scrap aluminum like 99% of other manufacturers. Thats why there are so many of them left from the 70s still in use. Copper elements are more durable and thermally conductive. Brewing hotter is usually better and you're talking about a big batch brewer so thermal stability throughout the bed probably matters.

Jameson and Bushmill’s are not very exciting whiskies. The mid-palate heat gives them some legs, but there’s almost no complexity of any kind. Some of the flavor notes are nice but they vanish so quickly, it’s simply hard to enjoy them. Now Redbreast Single Pot Still whiskey on the other hand has clear sherry plumminess and a hint of dark fruit up top. The fruit turns more towards prunes and dried apricot, as a real sense of rye-heavy bourbon pepperiness kicks in with a fleeting sense of fresh herbs and vanilla. The sherry-soaked oak is what leads you towards a mellow finish that lingers for just the right amount of time while beckoning you to take another spicy, plummy, and fruit-filled sip.

So I recently learned that the differences between espresso and ristretto isn't water being run through it longer or shorter. It's actually a finer grind or more densely packed grounds that extracts in a similar amount of time, but yields half the liquid and is also much more concentrated. It's described as bolder and sweeter, and better tasting?

So my question is if it produces better coffee, and the only downside is you get less of it or you might not like how strong the taste is per sip. Why not just water ristretto down instead of making espresso or lungo? It seems like ristretto is the espresso of espresoo and taking the idea of high extraction and high concentration to the limit of what your machine can push out.

People drink it,Turkish people.

But if you're asking to value judge methods, turkish coffee is barbaric. You get 100% of what's in the coffee because it's dissolved in water instead of just brewed, that means you get the all the bad flavors of coffee. Generally the point of brew methods is to hold back the bad flavors of coffee.

Eat some coffee grounds. If your reaction was "I wish I could drink what was in my mouth just now", then turkish coffee is for you. I'm not shitting on it. It is drinkable. But you asked what you're in for.

I normally make my coffee with a siphon pot at best and a percolator at worst, but dire circumstances have forced me to regress back into instant coffee. Is there anything better than what’s available in grocery stores for instant coffees or am I doomed to have mediocre cups until I get a house? I promise I’m not trolling, I just don’t have the ability to use my siphon as often as I’d like for the forseeable future.

You can buy instant versions of specialty coffee from many specialty coffee roasters but it is almost certainly prohibitively expensive. Like the place that I order from has one single kind of instant from one of their partners and it's $19 for 6 packets, which is over 3x more expensive than whole bean per cup.

Black for coffee.
Sugar for any milk-based beverages like Capuccinos, Lattes etc.
It's difficult to discern the flavors in coffee if milk and especially sugar are added. So every coffee will taste the same. I'd say drinking coffee black is a prerequisite to discovering the world of coffee in the first place because it enables you to experience the sheer variety. A high quality, well-extracted coffee from Kenia can almost taste like citrus juice, it has nothing to do with coffee in the typical sense.

Probably because you and most other posters in this thread enjoy drinking coffee and actively pursue making and drinking better cups of coffee. Now you might start thinking you know a thing or two, maybe you're the "coffee guy" in your social circle, but Hoffmeme is way more experienced and knowledgeable about what you enjoy than you will likely ever be yourself. For most people that's probably not a big deal- you can throw a basketball around a little and enjoy it while knowing NBA games are happening- but for some people the idea that someone else is living their dream is incredibly infuriating. At this point you have 2 options: accept that there's someone more knowledgeable and experienced than you on a subject you have an interest in and try to learn from them, or reject every idea that comes from that person and only surround yourself with ideas that reinforce your ego don't challenge you in any way. Are there any actually consistent cheap burr grinders under $100 / a good buying guide for burr grinders? These stupid fucking americas test kitchen videos always have such expensive products. Their Best Buy (capresso infinity conical burr) was like $100 and best overall (Baratza encore) was like 140$. I’m tempted to just buy the nicer one because the video said the Best Buy was shittier with lower qualities of beans but didn’t really explain how

Here's my spiced coffee recipe, I hope you guys make it and then tell me what you think:
Ingredients:
>Ground cafe du monde (or preferred coffee. Cheaper coffees require no cold brew hot bloom and can be directly cold brewed).
RATIO: ONE CUP COFFEE-4 CUPS WATER
>Star anise (~2 pods/1 teaspoon),
>Vanilla extract,
>Cloves (2-4 cloves to taste; you can always add more at the end but you can't take away!),
>Cinnamon (about 1/2 to 1 stick, or, 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon ground),
>Ginger (4 teaspoons),
>Nutmeg (1 teaspoon. Remember that nutmeg is sweet and you're adding sweetened milk, this recipe makes 4 servings!) to taste,
>1/4 cup coconut cream (NOT CREAM OF COCONUT, that is sweetened), 1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk (total, so 1/16 cup or 1 tablespoon per drink, of each),

Cold brew, hot bloom your coffee: pour about 1.5 cups of hot water over the grounds, shove your spices and vanilla in while it's still hot, allow to bloom for 30 seconds, then pour over the rest of your water. Let steep in the fridge or at room temp--covered, obviously--overnight. Let those flavors get to know eachother and mingle. You can add your 1/2 cup coconut cream and 1/2 cup S.C. milk now, or 1/16 cup each, per drink, when you are serving it. I prefer now.

Take that bitch out, filter it through a fine meshed sieve. Drink it.

Aldi are selling De’Longhi Dedica Espresso Machines (pic related on special soon) for $169 aussie dollarydoos, I see they usually retail for about $200. Thinking of getting one but I was wondering if I could do any better for about the same price?
For context $169 AUD is equivalent to $122 USD, although we have GST and stuff so I don't think think the same machine would retail for exactly $122 in the US.

Don't know much about the breakages personally but you're going to struggle to get any consistency out of the coffee. I actually researched this thing. It has proper temp control but you'll still have to run an empty shot beforehand.
This is a popular machine so parts are plenty. But a large part of its structure is integrated into the frame. So if say the grouphead breaks somehow then the whole thing is fucked.
You can replace the panarello wand cover with a sleeve that turns it into a proper wand. Or just replace the entire wand. Or even just pulling the cover off and use the tube inside.
You can get unpressurized baskets and bottomless portafilters for it too if you feel like it.
I honestly would pick a machine over moka any day, even those shitty steam machines, which are basically just higher pressure moka pots anyway. The moka pot is just too fiddly, both to prepare, brew and clean. I have a real hard time using it with my gas stove too, basically have to hold the thing in the air while brewing.
