How the hell do people find the time to cook anything other than fast/easy/healthy meals at home?

Weekdays
>Work for 8-12 hours
>come home
>play games for a few hours and/or watch a movie or two
>sleep

Weekends
>off work. either resting or going out with friends or playing games.
who the hell wants their days off prepping food/cooking/cleaning? that's a whole afternoon right there.

Not only that, but cooking at home isn't any less expansive than eating out when you want to eat anything even remotely fancy (i.e not rice, beans and standard chicken)

>No debt
This is a pretty stupid way to live. Most secured loans, including mortgages and auto loans, have less interest than you can make from investing. If you were handed $150k cash and wanted a $150k house, it would be a better idea to put $50k down and take a $100k 3.5% loan for the rest of the house and invest your remaining $100k in the stock market where it would earn an average 10% returns over time. The difference in interest rate between your debt and assets is literally free money that you're flushing down the toilet by being a paranoid boomer.

Not to mention the increased standard of living that borrowers enjoy over cash-payers because they can shift the enjoyment of property forward in time to better align with the bulk of their lives. Cash-paying boomers die with large bank accounts that they never got to spend, 50% of which gets hoovered up by the state, if they don't die with a collection of recently-purchased boats and cars that they barely had a chance to use.

AND that's not to mention the fact that having a mixture of debt and assets (and cash) is much more secure than just having the net worth all in cash. If you have $100k mortgage, $100k assets, and $10k in cash, you can liquidate the assets in an emergency to cover almost any necessary expense. You could pay for a serious medical emergency for yourself or a family member, or pay a lawsuit for example. Then the $100k debt you're still left with is still of the agreeable low-interest variety and you still have someplace to live. Contrast that with the situation of a man who has $10k in cash and a $100k house: if he were suddenly pressed for $80k in an emergency it would be very difficult to acquire, and could leave him homeless depending on who the creditor is.

Pretty much the only way I can wind down after work is cooking/cleaning. I get home, sick and tired from work, and spend 2 hours listening to podcasts/music and cooking. It feels good to do something constructive, considering that I fucking hate my job.

Cooking my meals every night saves me money, it's healthier, and I'm honing a skill. I relax and veg-out with books/tv/vidya afterwards, for maybe an hour, but the important thing is the cooking.

I would argue that it's objectively much freer to have a diverse portfolio of both debt and assets rather than have all your worth tied up in property. Both for the security I alluded to in paragraph 3, and because it allows me a lot more liquidity to use my money for diverse purposes whenever I feel like it, move it around, capitalize on new opportunities, etc. I think fearing debt in general is somewhat of a fallacy that can and should be unlearned. Consider the fact that all wealthy elites with professional asset managers, and all corporations for that matter, have both debt and assets that dwarf their cash holdings.

Nope, not even close. The cost of food for a home cooked meal is about 1/2 to 1/4 for my family of four. We picked up pizza tonight because we were all in a rush, but tomorrow will be pot roast, yams and maybe some cornbread or a cake. Prep time for all that is about 1/2 hour. Toss a salad (10 minutes max) we are done. Time to get take out or eat out is 15 to 30 minutes each way + time to get seated + time for cook to do has thing = 90 minutes to 2 hours for dinner.

Yeah, especially given how low interest rates on homes are right now it is stupid to pay off your debt early in any way. That being said I wouldn't do a cash out refi that put me under 20% equity. Not paying PMI is nice, and you tend to get better rates once you there is at least 20% equity in the home since it is less risk for the bank.

if i can't prep, cook, and clean in under, let's say, half an hour, i won't have it as a meal

having a rice cooker with a timer can cut out most of the work

then you can do stuff like make stir fries or buy pre-made (or make ahead of time) curry sauces

i made butter chicken with a jar of sauce i bought at fucking TARGET...and it was great

i've got a hot plate on my back porch and i carry all my prep on a cafeteria tray that i've wrapped in aluminum foil, added some oil to a skillet, tossed in some cubed chicken titties, cooked until nice and brown, and then poured over the sauce, put the lid on, sprayed and wiped everything down, tossed the foil away, took the skillet inside after 5-10 minutes of simmering, and served it over rice. wash the skillet by hand, put the plate and fork in the dishwasher, and done. house doesn't stink, didn't heat up the kitchen, no oil splatter...just some good food and my dishwasher never gets overcrowded because i only wash utensils and plates

I've a busy job I enjoy and a baby boy. For a long time I had almost infinite time to game, do hobbies, exercise, watch shit, cook etc. I used to stay up until midnight almost every night if not later. Now it is more like get home and immediately do chores and cook then the evening routine before bed. I sleep because uninterrupted sleep is not certain so I'd rather go to sleep by 10pm at the latest in case I'm up again at 4am or something.

I still prioritise cooking. It isn't that difficult. I still bake, make fresh pizzas, cook two or three course meals a couple of times a week. When there is some other priority usually we have to eat something quick. Pasta and pesto. Gnocchi with cheese etc. Sometimes I'll cook a bigger baked dish like lasagne or something which will last a couple of days. We do alright.

When I've been single I rarely bothered to cook for just me. I usually ate cereal, toast, sandwiches, soup, frozen pizza etc. Occasionally a big vegetable thing that'd do several days. When you've a family setup you are in part obligated to feed nutritious stuff appropriate to budget.

gaming/lazing out is your problem, you are killing your motivation to do anything that feeds your soul, just letting your brain go into alpha waves like a zombie. Maybe you need a snack at mid-afternoon so you can breeze through a grocery store on the way home for a quick mood. Maybe you need more planned leftovers to come out of your freezer to morph into good meals later.

It's fine to eat out at whim, minus the covid risk from it, and for people who commute in miserable traffic, or have physically demanding or draining jobs, you can be drained on some days,a-ok you deserve a break, but if you don't cook food you don't enjoy the same as dining out, if not more, you might be lacking an imagination or many life experiences. God, right? Who the hell has time for cooking? When I'm not spending my life working to make someone else rich, I just want to get home to spend the rest of my waking hours passively consuming entertainment towards no discernible growth of skills or self. I personally never mentally developed past adolescence, so the notion of mild, regimented labor brings shock and stress to my system. Have you seen the drawdowns and liquidations coming out of pro shops last ten years. Ok so we’re in agreement that nobody is infallible in markets. Pros are comfortable buying at these prices because they are the first mover when the music stops. The willingness of the wallstreet pro to buy means nothing for the safety of investment for regular people.

These prices seem high because we are on the verge of inflation. Inflation doesn’t go uncheck for long. Austerity is introduced along with deflation that will wreck the indexes, meme stocks, defensive, cryptos… everything will be red. Even real estate. You want a world of pain? Most dishes give leftovers for a few days which makes it so you don't have to cook. When I make pot pies, there's enough filling for four individual pies and I cheat and use rolls of frozen pie crust so they're easy to make. When I make chicken and dumplings, there's enough for five or six good sized bowls. You'd have that result with any soup. I'm going to make chicken paprikash soon. That'll give me four or five meals. Assuming you agree that it's impossible to "beat the market" by cleverly timing your purchases with public information (which, although demonstrably true, seems about as difficult to convince people of as trying to convince a white woman that crystals don't contain healing magic), it follows directly that it is more rational to invest all the money you intend to invest at the earliest possible time so it can be in the market longer.
