Food wasn’t really memeworthy in the 90’s from what I remember. People just ate stuff without thinking too much about it. If a new food variant came along we ate it just because it was there. If you were to talk about some new restaurant you went to, people would look at you like you were from outer space like “who gives a fuck asshole. I ate food yesterday too. Why are you telling me this?”. People in the 90’s were much more like to chat about the latest Seinfeld episode if you can imagine it. Back before Netflix everyone HD to tune in to NBC at the same time to see the show.

in the 70s starbucks had two sizes, tall (12oz) and short (8oz), and they made all their drinks with whole milk. That is roughly what it is like in Italy, which is literally what Shultz was going for when he started the company (They also didn't originally serve lattes because lattes aren't an actual thing over there, but USAians thought they were getting jewed hard because cappuccinos are half air). They still had short cups when I worked there in the late 00s, but nobody ever ordered one because they didn't know they existed

Well Americans wanted bigger sizes as they expanded, so they came up with calling their large size (16oz) "grande" which is "big" in Italian, again chasing the italian coffee bar idea. What else were they going to call it? Short, tall, and taller? And when people wanted even larger sizes they kinda got backed into a corner so they called it "venti" which means 20 in Italian, for the 20oz size

So in a weird twist of gluttony, the "small" size at starbucks actually used to be the largest size. Also a tall whole milk cappuccino isn't a ton of calories since it's half foam and is delicious but since the most popular drink there is a 20oz latte, Americans kind of realized that was a lot more calories so they demanded they make their drinks with lower fat milk to the point that nonfat milk is used at 1.5x the rate of all the others combined. And since skim milk tastes like garbage they demanded syrups to make it taste like something and here we are at the venti nonfat sugar free vanilla latte being super popular which is an abomination no Italian would recognize or accept

These are both on the right track, but it was really more a case of just adding bread to fucking everything. Bread bowls got big, stuffed crust stuff, ready-bake meals that were just whatever sloppa in a bread shell, that shit was everywhere.

Why do you lot think that the Midwest is just bumfuck towns in Iowa and Indiana? Chicago, Ann Arbor, Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Madison, even Indianapolis are all big cities with roughly the same culture as new York, despite what new yorkers would have you believe, and they all fancy restaurants and bustling food scenes. Chicago even has a three Michelin star place, Alinea. I don't think anyone in the twin cities has actually won a James beard award, but there's a few chefs who came pretty damn close, I currently work for one who is, according to word on the grapevine, very close to winning one. You all seem to think the Midwest is like the movie Fargo, but it ain't the nineties anymore. All of these cities are trash, but all cities around the world are trash, and like all of the big cities around the world, the only redeeming qualities of places like MSP is the food scene.

Around the time this was posted on reddit there was another lifehack one about ice soap, and someone made this post making fun of both of them which was super popular because it was understood by many that ice soap and 2am chili were both very stupid. In other words people have always known this shit was mega gay, even redditors
