That still doesn't make most mushrooms edible and while that might not be entirely inaccurate advice, you're still relying on people to be able to tell some species of mushroom vs others including a ton of very similar looking mushrooms.
There's a reason why mycology is a whole fucking thing and why general folk knowledge is to not eat anything you're not familiar with. If you wanna just yolo it, go ahead but know that there's a risk that you'll join the millions that have done the same thing and fucking died.
With that said, you can safely handle even the most poisonous mushrooms unless you're maybe deathly ill and even taste them as long as you spit them out.

I never implied or stated most of what you said. But anon was correct when he said that the deadly species are easily identified, and for those that are not, like the LBMs, you just stay away from. It’s pretty easy to safely pick half a dozen easily identifiable, popular mushrooms no different than picking edible mushrooms. Yes some people will eat Omphalotus olearius think they are chanterelles but this is woeful ignorance and not worth really discussing. Most mushrooms will at most give you GI upset and a select few will do worse. Again not advocating eating random mushrooms but lets drop the mycophobia especially when there are plenty of poisonous ornamental plants in our gardens and no one freaks out.

There are also plenty of plants that can make you sick and kill you, but we’re not terrified of them are we? Avoid Amanita and LBMs and stick to the popular dozen and you have very little to worry about. Considering how many people go mushroom hunting, especially moron amateurs looking for a new COVID hobby, there are very few serious poisoning cases.
