I was clearing out the cupboards, and I happened upon a bottle of classic Irn Bru. Now, I know there's an ongoing argument about whether the new 1901 stuff is the same as the pre-2018 stuff, but that neither here nor there.

The problem here, as you can see, the bottle is all compressed. The seal is still clearly intact. What the hell happened here?

Also I'm drunk and probably going to drink this despite the years of plastic leaching, potential to keep and sell it as a collectors item, and other nonsense unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Hold onto it, maybe there's a Scottish food museum who would be interested in putting it on display.

Does that read December 2012?

I had a pack of old Irn Bru bottles like that before. I tried drinking one of them and it was completely devoid of carbonation.
That's the main thing that happens to old bottles of soda. They end up just being flavored noncarbonated water.

I'm weighing the possible satisfaction of donating to a museum versus satisfying my curiousity over whether or not this is even still fizzy.

2017, I assume, which the label says is a best before date. I can't for the life of me remember when I bought this or when it rolled to the back of the cupboard.

I opened it. It made a schlorping noise and the bottle returned to a slightly less triangular shape. There's no fizz to it, so it's hard to comment on the taste being like I remember.

My disappointment is tremendous, but I have no regrets.

PET or PETE as it used to be called is porous to water. The water molecules move through it extremely slowly. After years of sitting it has drawn a partial vacuum.

You can recarbonate it if you’re dedicated enough. I think if you blow bubbles for 20 minutes straight with two small straws simultaneously, it will achieve a similar effect as the fresh product.

Only 5% of your daily calories and apparently that's a problem. I hate the Tories and I'm not even Scottish.

I drank it, but like I said, there was no fizz to it. As a result, it was really thick and syrupy to the point of almost being disgusting. I think I might have unintentionally ruined my memories of classic Irn Bru because of this.
I was too lazy/drunk to bother trying to do some bullshit recarbonation whatever.
