I have to say, I wonder if it could add a more concentrated peanut taste to stuff. Whenever I make peanutsauce for example, I always try to make the peanut taste more intense, but I don't know how. When I was younger I ate at some place that made that stuff taste really strong. Maybe this was their secret ingredient.

Interesting. Except for this and the fishsauce (I use 2 kinds of soysauce: ketjap manis and kikoman) the recipe is near identical to mine. Even though I know the sauce is of indonesian origin, I started putting some garam masala in there to give it some extra kick. Tastewise it can be a bit overpowering even if used only a little, but the benefits outweigh that slight shift in taste. Perhaps I was on the right track with that anyway. I'm not sure about red paste though, but I'll try to find that masaman one. Perhaps fish sauce too. Thanks, anon.

Oh yeah, I missed that in the recipe. Peanut sauce has to be hot of course. Instead of peppers, I like to add some sambal brandal (I try to keep it indonesian). Besides adding some nice heat, it also has a great flavor, and it's sweet, so the sauce doesn't need extra sugar anymore either. It might not be hot enough for Thai's though.
