in the case of something like beer or cigarettes it's the brain's reward system that makes you like the thing because of the alcohol or nicotine etc

in the case of something like black coffee or blue cheese or pickled herring or anchovies i'm not sure. it's not like the culture is pressuring us to eat those things, they're not cool like beer or cigarettes. yet millions of people grow to love them. there's something going on.

you can aquire a taste for pretty much anything unpleasant, its just easier for drugs like coffee and beer because of their positive effects

To me it depends on how adventurous you are and how important taste is to you. Some people eat merely to subsist. Regarding alcohol you'll have the ones who only enjoy the effects of getting drunk and those who'll try different liquors and such because of the taste.

Then why do I sometimes want a beer more than wine or vodka which I usually prefer. If your explanation was true, I would only want vodka because that rewards my brain's reward system way more than beer.
