Peat smoke was something the smart Irish figured out how not to get into their whisky. They heated the barley from underneath the floor, using Roman bath style flooring.
Immature palates like a bunch taint of smoke and the flavor of muddy peat in their mouth.

Let be a little more clear.
>Single malt
This has a legal definition, and the requirements for it to be called must be adhered to for it to be legally sold as such
>Japanese Whisky
This has no legal definition, and therefore has no requirements that must be adhered to for it to be legally sold as such.
The whole thing works by you thinking "Japanese whiskey" works the same way "Irish whiskey" does. Irish whiskey has a legal definition that says it must be distilled and matured in Ireland. Japanese whiskey has no legal definition, so "whiskey sold by Japanese companies" meets a common sense definition.
Does that make sense to you?

The Illicit still is 33% more expensive here.
Also despite the extreme bias presented by enthusiasts, chill filtration suites a cleaner lighter style like Glenlivet. It's not some voodoo magic that subtracts good flavor - it affects different flavors differently and positively effects texture.
That said the illicit still is still better, probably due to the huge abv increase. I do think it's worse than Glenfiddich 12 though.
23rd street single malt is a much better example of the candy sweet style Illicit Still presents, I highly recommend that if you're willing to pay new world premiums.

Won a split the pot raffle at my local pub few weeks ago so I decided to treat myself. Most I've ever spent on whiskey before (€180). But I got to say, this tastes amazing. Sometimes I think whiskey tasters are bullshitting about the tastes they list for whiskeys but I can really get the notes in this. It has a subtle vanilla and raisin taste to it and a real fruity scent. Its unbelievably smooth as well. I usually like a couple ice cubes in my whiskey but I drink this neat no problem.

How often do you guys drink whiskey? I usually like a glass or two every night. I don't bother getting "drunk" anymore really. I'm happy to just get a small buzz these days.

today was a good day. also the guy who has been shitting on the Loch Lomond 18 "because its too bitter to drink" doesnt know what the fuck bitter means. Its densely sweet and rich with fruityness with moderate tart note leaning into the finish. similar enough to the 12 without the super malty notes, but you can add a drop or two of water and it will poke out its head. for $65-70 USD its a bonafide bargain.

I haven't opened the Edradour yet, but when I raised it from the tin I nearly creamed my jeans. That color is NOICE. Might not get to it today, but I'll be pouring it next to some Glendronach 12 to compare.

I wouldnt be surprised, Canadian whisky plays fast and loose when it comes to regulation so a lot coloring and flavoring can be added after the fact and it can still be called whisky. Theres even the rule that 1/11th (9.09%) of the drink can be non-whisky added after the fact which is the case with whiskies like foxheart which is mixed with rum as its main gimmick.
There are sugarier or more candy-like' whiskies ive had than CC12 (wisers is far worse), my main gripe is that the sweetness was very 'deep' kinda like a dense cake if that makes sense.
CC12s saving grace like with a lot of whiskies is the price is right for what it is. I prefer something like Lot 40 as far as Canadian whiskies go but thats a very different flavor and a bit more expensive.

my Glendronach has been sitting for a little over a year now and still tastes 85% of what it did when it was freshly cracked. The neck pour of the Edradour is so far unimpressive, feels very tight and less like a typical sherry nose and more like Amaretto as the tasting/nosing notes on the packaging refer to sugared almonds and orange marmalade and that is really the extent of the feature after about 30 mins in glass(a slight cinnamon-ness that you can get from bourbon on the nose with some water). not even a hint of dried fruits or chocolate, but for the first time I have experienced a medicinal note, like the residual flavor of latex gloves when your at the denist. Maybe the sherry barrels they used were properly dried over time instead of rushed with additional toasting. that color is truly something though, being natural and all.

Either mine was corked, or you don't know what the fuck bitter means.
That said, the 12 is also quite bitter (not nearly as much, but it's defiantly a flaw), and I've had two bottles, two independent bottles, and inchmoan (where I thought that bitterness was actually balanced), so I doubt it was corked.

i get no chocolate on either. honestly the uniqueness of both is a blueberry like quality, sweet at first and then tart/sour/slighty bitter for some maybe. the 18 doesnt state any specifics about maturation on the label like the 12, but I havent looked at the box with much intent yet so its possible they explain more. I would guess it comes from the peat that they do mention or their use of Lomond stills.

What were the independents you had? I'd like to look around for them. Also, I assume you have some taste for peat since you mention their peated expression Inchmoan being more to your liking, so perhaps its type of sweetness is too much in that direction for you. To me they are only slightly tannic with the 12 being less so. The 18 has a woodiness that reminds me of Glenmorangie's Quinta Ruban 14. my 18 was bottled 04 06 19 and my 12, 06 06 20. with as much as they produce I can imagine it might not be hard to get a bad run or maybe one that is less consistent than their baseline, and with the independents still being so similar is sort of surprising, their profile may not just fit your palate.

High Spirits Loch Lomond 12 is the one I liked. That said what I tried looks nothing like what I found when googling.

>no chocolate on either
Just the 18. And not in a subtle way, in the oh my god this is disgusting spit it out way that I would react to real 90% chocolate. I don't think it's peated in any way, though I'd expect their casks are long past dead.

>its type of sweetness is too much in that direction for you
No. It's really not sweet.
>The 18 has a woodiness that reminds me of Glenmorangie's Quinta Ruban 14
Sure but I found that to be a positive quality in the Quinta Ruben, that would probably become problematic if it hit 18 years in that barrel. But even then it'd be less of an issue because the Quinta Ruben is actually sweet / fruity.
> their profile may not just fit your palate

>their casks are long past dead
allegedly they re-condition 25,000 casks a year with 5 coopers. i imagine they are using heavily charred barrels to run them as long as possible and that their sherry barrels are prepped with sherry syrup. the 18 to me has a real maple syrup kind of depth to its sweetness where the sugary part is more integrated instead of a blast of sweet up front and then that can beat that. it was a bit drier than the 12 though so perhaps some PX or amontillado was used
