A few times in the past year or so, the payment window and the food window are separated enough to where I can swoop in front of someone who is at the payment window and then snag their food from the order window (some people realized what was happening and started honking, some I guess weren't paying attention or didn't care because there was no reaction)

not really I probably would have been fine either way. I just use that example because it is a fond memory that blends the new world of fintech and the old world of your buddy taking a stock tip and knocking on your door to celebrate when he x20s his money in a year. prepping the food, throwing it in the oven, doing dishes while it cooked, cracking open a couple brews and throwing the clams in the channel in my backyard was comfy.

This is how it was for my niece working at Taco Bell this summer, tiny ass town of 17k in S. Indiana; they regularly had the dining area closed because of staffing issues. Thing is the area restaurants were already having trouble finding people before the pandemic, there was one chain that had wanted to open a location there but changed their minds when they saw how bad the labor market is. If my neice didn't have to go back to school for her senior year she could have become a shift manager by now simply because she's one of the few that reliably shows up and actually tries to do her job well.

>Not quitting the minute the gubmint gives you more money to lounge around than work
Quit my job so fucking fast and sat on unemployment till it ran out. Took a nice vacation, went travelling, had a fucking blast - learned some new skills and transitioned into a lucrative field with much cushier working conditions than what I came from. If you didn't take the pandemic as an opportunity, I weep for you, seriously.
