What is it like working in a restaurant? My parents always gave me everything I wanted but they've cut me off and now I need to get a job. I can work hard but I've never done manual labor or any kind of labor for that matter.

Was usually the only cook in the kitchen, so I would get slammed and none of the girls up front could help except bagging food. Also had to carry in all of the ingredient deliveries and mow the grass since I was the one guy, and the kitchen had no ac so I spent a lot of time in the freezer to cool off. Convenience stores with deli counters are the most fun to work in. I used to work at Wawa and had a great time. Everybody knew each other and we would frequently have parties with coworkers. A lot of shift drama between morning, evening and overnight shifts, but for the most part wasn't too bad. I ran the evening shifts and a lot of times coworkers and I would go out and get drinks at the bar after work. I dated 3 girls from work and it's fun getting blowjobs while working. I work as a database architect now and honestly miss the job at Wawa. Enjoying work sometimes is worth taking a lower pay, but unfortunately I get paid too much now for it to be THAT worth it. If I was only making like $20/hr I might consider taking it again.

Don't get me wrong - I actually liked the job. But the people you have to work with are clinically retarded, criminals, druggies, or all three. Every day you wake up and ask yourself "Do I die today because jamal got high and forgot the digger controls?" or "Do I die today because the blade on our mill is on the brink of shattering and our kike boss refuses to replace it". Then you finish the week, look at your paycheck, and remember that you're working for fucking minimum wage. Two hours of travel time a day. An hour of unpaid time on site. Whoops, that adds up to *checks notes* just over half of the minimum wage!
I got fired "without cause" for asking an H&S question about the mill btw. Two days later the blade did shatter and two people who were nearby got killed, and a third maimed.

find a place with a foreigner for a boss, and if possible, not a chain
in my case I host, take to go orders, serve, mix drinks, bus tables, along with cleaning the bathrooms every night, plus whatever else he asks. it's boring, but I still love it more than a year later, far better than waging as a cashier, less heavy work than bagging, much easier smalltalk with customers, and because boss trusts me I have the master password to deal with unhappy customers rather than make drama and having to hold up the line.
kitchen, I can't say. all our food is frozen except the salad ingredients, and it's all boiled or fried. we drop a cook every 3 months and the food is identical because it's just a chart with the cook times.

my friend said subway and taco bell were the easiest kitchens ever, but he preferred Tijuana flatts on the daily because he had friends, they smoked weed, and his boss protected them from their DM.
I liked McDonald's in 1999, but Culvers is more professional even if it's the same shit, lower volume.
my ma always wanted me to get into chick-fil-a because I'm courteous (she worked there too, it was just nuggets, tenders, fries, sandwiches, drinks), but to a point. it's a very simple menu which is what attracted me to chipotle, but having to say "my pleasure" sounds so fake and gay, I make a point not to say thanks when ordering there at chick fil a to save them the dreaded getting a warning forgot giving 100% all the time
if you have options, opt for a smaller menu overall, less grief. chipotle is pretty much the best entry place chain I can think of, it's just high volume

I didn't know what I was getting into, didn't know any better, and I also wanted to learn some of the skills - I did learn how to use a chainsaw, drive an ATV, most of how to operate a mill, and how to operate a fair range of heavy machinery. I got to learn all these things because I wasn't a dumb nog and I was the 20% part of the 80-20 rule. I was able to use some of these skills to get better jobs, but I got snap fired during our last snap lockdown :)
>why wouldn't you fire a lawsuit
I got fired 'without cause' which is something any employer can do in this country any time within the first three months of employment. They do not need to list any reason for firing you, which means there is basically zero avenue to get recourse for wrongful terminations. No need for a whistleblower report when workplace fatalities do that for free a few days later. Work-safe here does not give a shit about this place, though, because it's managed by a native trust and they do not get subjected to the same laws as humans do. Issue is he is literally always working and you can see him suffer in relationships and with job stress. But to be fair that happens in other industries, but you can't smoke a j out back and hang with your buddies at an office job.

A chair would be in the way in the kitchen. Your also moving all the time, picking things from the fridges, putting things into pans or removing stuff out of them. If you are working at a smaller spot you are probably cooking the food and doing the plates at the same time too.

>Making someone stand for 8 hours a day seems inhumane.
I'm not a burger so I wouldn't know. In Europe you get breaks, one hour is mandatory if you are working an 8+ hour shift. When I first started cooking I never took my breaks, since I felt I got too tired when I had the time to sit down. Nowadays, I always take my break since I would go insane otherwise.

almost any night job (night jobs are mostly paying someone to make sure the place doesnt burn down by morning).
just think of a place or business that needs to pay someone just to basically exist and you'll find heaps.
Hotels, Hostels and Motels for example are legally required to have a member of staff on site at all times.
It means 90% of the time, your night shifts in these places are just chillin.
Once in a while you have to like.. check-out/in someone at 4am or ask some drunks to quieten down but thats about it.

I knew a guy with a pilot's license that got $60k/year salary just for owning a plane.
The rural fire service paid him to be "on call" all year.
He didnt have to actually DO anything, except be sober and be able to drop whatever he was doing instantly and respond to a forest fire.
So he'd sit around for most of the year just reading or playing vidya.
He said the worst part of the job was just having to be sober all the time, but on cold rainy winter nights he'd sneak a beer or two.

There's also lots of good /out/ jobs where you're alone innawoods and not interacting with any humans. Jobs maintaining trails or resupplying/cleaning remote Huts and stuff.

Just use your imagination and think outside of the 9-5 box.

He gets paid $60k to not have a life. If he had a real job he could do anything he wanted in the evenings and weekends but instead he's forced to do nothing just in case he gets a call. That's not worth 60k. I'm on call one week every month and even this sucks.

Was a dishwasher for a few months at a country club when I turned 16. It was pretty shit and my coworkers were weirdos. I'd probably feel differently if I had good memories to go with the bad but I don't. There was a huge divide between the kitchen folk and the servers/foh to the point where i don't even recall even talking to one of waitresses at any point so nothing good from that angle either. I remember one night we were cleaning up and I had my area completely cleaned and squared away. I was ready to go because it was a school night and it was already late. One of the waitresses found a couple of little cups with like ranch or some shit out in the dining room and just threw it right into my area and ranch got all over the place. Perfect timing, the manager walked by but didn't see what happened, just the immediate aftermath and made a comment about me not having my area done and people are wanting to go home or some shit like that. Like I was just jerking off and keeping everyone from leaving.

That pissed me off. I went to school the next day and then back to work afterwards and the dish area was COMPLETELY fucked. Started barking at me as soon as I walked in. Did that last night and never went back. They tried calling me but just ignored that shit.

It’s shit work but if you’re a server, you can make solid money doing it. I had some nights I was pushing $30/hr. with tips. You can also hook up with other servers usually; I got to fool around with a fundamentalist Christian guy that worked with me. Lots of fun he was.

if you have cute girl coworkers that are young (early 20s - maybe mid 20s), and the guys at your job are actually cool it can be kind of enjoyable. It still sucks, but I had a few jobs where my coworkers had fun personalities and we'd joke around all day. and also qt coworkers gave you constant eye candy to look at. It can be fun at times but also it sucks overall.

The problem with restaurant work isn't the work. You work hard and have to keep track of a million things, but that isn't the problem.

The problem is the complete and total lack of respect from customers and from management, and if you're not lucky, your co-workers too.

Happy kitchens are fucking few and far between, if there are any out there still at all post lockdowns. Most restaurants are owned and managed by a team of complete dickheads who constantly run their own business into the ground trying to step over a dollar to pick up a dime and while they hemorrhage money out one side of their ass and throw perfectly good food away with the other, they love to jump YOUR shit over every little thing that goes wrong, 90% of which will not even be your fault.

And it's the constant bullshit that actually makes most people fucking hate restaurant work and become like me, in that they enjoyed the work itself and being part of a crew, but I will never fucking work in a restaurant again, I'll just fucking kill myself first. Not doing it.

Hospitality is unique and depending on where you work/who you work with it will vary a lot.
One place will be boring as shit with an overbearing manager, the other will be boring as shit but your coworkers are fun and you're all functional alcoholics and your manager is negligent so you can steal cash out of the register to fund your Friday night.
It's a bit like bar work: Do it while you're younger and don't give a shit/can have fun anywhere but as you get older you're just going to want to gtfo of the industry because you can't put up with the lifestyle anymore.

Not the person you responded to but I worked at BK for around a year. It was okay. Was pretty chill and didn't really mind it too much but it was overall boring. As for hacks, if you're getting anything chicken related, ask for it fresh from the fryer always. Most of the chicken products just sit under a heating lamp for a long time because it doesn't get ordered often. Don't buy any of the expensive burgers like the southwestern king or any shit like that, it's overpriced to shit and it's usually just a whopper with 2 extra ingredients on it so you can just ask for a normal whopper and ask for the extras for free. Never pay full price for a whopper, there's a survey you can fill out on the back of a receipt that lets you get a free whopper if you pay for small fries + small drink. Can just write random numbers/letters on and the employee won't give a shit and will ring out the discount anyway. Never get ice, that's a given with most fast food places but I don't remember if it ever got cleaned. If you want fresh fries, you could ask for fries with no salt and they have to make a fresh batch of fries. Then add your own salt in. The best thing you can get at burger king in my opinion is a double cheese burger, add lettuce onions and stacker sauce. The crispy chicken sandwich is pretty fucking good too when it's fresh off the fryer but it's overpriced. You can always ask for a small cup for water and then fill it with any fountain drink if you really care, but that's more of a general fast food thing. Most of the food is extremely meh but stick to the basic shit because it's the thing that gets ordered the most and people usually make it fresh + harder to fuck up. that's all i can really think off the top of my head

It's very tiring, filthy, chaotic work that has odd hours and will leave you feeling very tired afterwards but if you can get on as a line chef, it'll go really quickly. As long as you can negotiate the fuckery of odd hours, you can earn quite decent pay and good restaurants will let you have a meal during your shift so that's an extra expense out. AWRXG

Fucking hated working food. Used to work at a pizza place and then a dishwasher for a few places. Pizza place was boring as hell but the pay was shit. Was supposed to get tips as well but my manager and coworkers would conatantly trade pizza for weed so I never got shit. Dishwash was the fucking worst. They expected me to not only clean up the entire fucking joint every god damm day but they then started trying to teach me how to fucking cook as well. Jesus nothing is worse than having a billion things to do, only to be pulled to the side to be yelled at that I don't know how to cook anything, then get bitched at that nothing is clean, then have your coworkers sit there bitching at you for being to slow while they do nothing to help and refuse to help cause "it's not my job". I eat out ever unless someone else is paying. I hate the food industry with a passion.
