Strubs. These are made in Montreal so may not be available in your area. General rule is that you want the ones where the brine gets all cloudy when you shake the jar. Also these are kept in the refrigerated section of the grocery store, not in the canned aisle like Bicks. Maybe this means they have less poison in them, not sure.

already had Claussen on hand, picked up Grillo's and Bubbies just now. wanted whole ones, but Grillo's only had the hot spears.

Claussen has the best texture of all 3, but is definitely more salty. I think they have upped the sodium over time because I don't remember them being like this.

Grillo's I can't say 100% that the texture is not as good as Claussen since I only have spears to compare to, but they were noticeably less crisp/crunchy. Really nice fresh taste, kind of reminded me of pico de gallo - great flavor and the hint of spiciness was nice. Haven't tried the non-pickle bits in the brine, but I imagine they are also pretty good. Thanks to the anon who mentioned opening their garbage packaging over the sink, as it immediately spilled over. I'll keep an eye out for the whole dills to test out next time.

Bubbies were also very tasty - kind of a unique flavor I haven't had before. More crisp than Grillo's (again, I can't draw any true comparisons since spears), but not quite as crisp as Claussen's.

>Saltiness (least salty being better): Grillo's > Bubbie's > Claussen
>Flavor (underlying flavor ignoring saltiness): Bubbie's > Claussen/Grillo's (they have a dissimilar flavor profile - would depend on what I was in the mood for at any given time)
>Crispness: Claussen > Bubbie's > Grillo's
>Packaging: Bubbie's/Claussen > Grillo's

and now I have a nice assortment of different pickles in my fridge, so I'm pretty happy about that. Thanks for reading my blog.

I'd probably forgive the slight hit on crispness and go with Bubbie's since it seemed to be the highest quality and best matched what I might expect if I were to ferment my own at home (as one anon also mentioned). As soon as I saw the cloudy brine I pretty much knew it was going to be great. Grillo's may still be very good, but I've yet to try the whole ones and the packaging really is a turnoff. Also hated having to go into whole foods to get them, but my dogs at least enjoyed the ride - and eating/drinking out of plastic just fucking sucks... I really hate that glass has gone out of style. A bit sad that Claussen has upped the sodium, as it's always been very good in the past, but I can't ignore the clear difference when tasting them side by side. For mass-market, most readily available pickles, though, Claussen definitely beats the rest.

If I want to make spicy pickles (ie. add habaneros to the liquid), do I need to do a vinegar pickle as opposed to a fermentation? Does this mean my spicy pickles need to be vinegar + refrigerator?
