What is it like being a bartender?
Tell me some of the most memorable stories you have from your job.
What's your favorite drink to... drink?
To make?
Um, I can't think of any other questions cause I don't know anything about bartending. I guess just expand further from there in any way you want.

Bartending destroys your social life unless you like hanging out with other bartenders and bar flies.

There is a shit-ton of substance abuse. Nearly everyone does coke, is an alcoholic, etc.

If you end up at a really good cocktail bar, it can be really rewarding. It's also super-competitive and you'll be working under close scrutiny and constant competition from the other bartenders. Think of it like working in a really nice kitchen. There is endless shit to learn, new techniques to master, new equipment and recipes and concepts to add to your repertoire. Rotavaps are going to be the next big thing, mark my words.

You'll see some fucked up shit if you're in even a slightly busy bar. Alcohol is a terrible drug that makes people do stupid things. Actually, I'm being generous if I call anyone between the age of 19 and 25 "people". They're raving mongoloids. I think the drinking age should be raised to 26.

People will be demeaning, but it's one of the few jobs where you get to be an asshole right back to them, and then have the bouncer kick them out.

It's a difficult job with a heavy bias towards attractive people with a great smile, so it can be tough to get in.

Sorta, he's a Japanese bartender, which means tons of hold and manipulating ice (common Japanese style thing), which means his hands are both sopping wet and ice cold. It does happen, but that's more on the style than anything.

Death and Company in New York and Denver and Los Angeles
Aviary in Chicago
Any bar program at a 3 michelin star restaurant in New York (I had a friend who poured drinks at Le Bernardin and Jean Georges Vongerichten for a few years. He made 150k a year easy, but the stress was beyond imagining)

But really, any decent-sized city will have an amazing cocktail bar or two that will teach you a shit ton.

usually just domestic beer in tap. the tap is the big lever. it's all people typically drink - domestics 'domestic' to America so things like Budweiser, Busch, Yuengling, Coors, Miller, Heineken, Blue Moon - these all come in keg sizes of 1/6, 1/4, and 1/2's. the keg comes in, you connect the shit to the tap and the just serve. A quarter of it all gets wasted on overfilling because most bartenders can't pout a fucking beer and then another quarter of it gets wasted on people who can't drink.

I used to think bartending was a bit of a "cool" job, with how its portrayed in games and shows and so on. But then when I look into the ones I like - quiet bars with some lone bartender serving drinks to a couple depressed regulars, they're actually shitholes or incredibly low paying, boring work. The busy bars with lots of customers are demanding jobs full of bitchy co-workers and drunk assholes. And then there's a pub like what my friend works in, where the regulars are all fat loud middle aged low brow workers that you pour 3 dozen beers for each - all banter and you're basically expected to socialise with them after hours, playing pool and whatever - that's nice and all, but not at all what I'd want.

Disappointed that the reality of bartending is more like >>16788503 instead of some comfy quiet bar with it's own cool factor like in OP image.

Gonna try to keep the recipe to myself, but it's very floral with a good balance between sweet and tart. Never had anyone dislike it and usually when a couple orders and one is indecisive seeing and trying this will be enough to sell a second. Not the best at taking pictures but fuck it. Rosemary garnish is good flavor wise but I feel a lavender sprig would work better looks wise.

One experiment I did that went right was a midori martini, though I doubt it's all that original and in fact I got the idea from a lavender martini I tried a couple weeks back at another bar. But what I did was:

2 oz gin or vodka (I recommend gin personally, but as with any martini it's up to you)
1/2 oz dry vermouth
3/4 oz midori
1/2 oz lime juice
shake, strain, etc
garnish with a cherry

if you are an introverted autist, its miserable. i worked at a bar for a few years and it was great because there was no 'sit down' area, we just made drinks and the waitresses took them to customers, and we would get a cut of all tips. then we 'upgraded' the bar with a sit down area, sucked major dick. the extra money from direct tips is not worth having to deal with customers, IMO. ive never hated normies so much since high school. and the boomer alcoholic faggots that come in repeatedly and think your their buddy cuz they tipped you 10 bucks arnt any better. i quit a few months after that

tl;dr its a good part time job if you're an extroverted people person but its not nearly as hip and cool as you might think, and it 100% is not career worthy

The management where I work loves what I make and knows it sells but we're corporate owned so we gotta sneak around if we're doing our own food/drink specials.

Like >>16791161 said, this probably won't be my career but the skills are useful for parties and shit and it's good part time. Best part of working at a place that's running on life support from to go food orders is I keep 100% of tips since no one else works front of house. Gets annoying when some fuckass with 0 situational awareness doesn't realize this and tips me like ass after deciding to bring him wife and their pack of shitlets for dinner and they weren't waited on hand and foot while the bar was full. Or when they come in on a slow afternoon and think an empty bar can afford to keep all 30+ taps running constantly and get pissy when the single IPA we don't have is the one they want and bitch to their wife "they don't have anything!" I fucking hate boomers man, at least the ones that obviously never worked at a restaurant. Though there's this boomer cop that comes in every so often that's pretty based. Realistically this is just paid training for if I ever decide to go to a better bar. Corporate office thinks I should only be paid tipped wages, despite being the only person front of house at a failing restaurant, but my managers change it so I'm paid $10/hr. Behind the bar you hear everything that's being said in front of the bar where people think they're private and can't hear anyone else talk except for their partner. Every night is filled with miserable stories.

It was fun, and it was terrible.

The money is good for not needing an education or anything. When you start, if the bar scene is your scene, it feels like you work at a party. But everyone has a time limit before it destroys their view of the world, if not themselves.

It'll be hard work if you're at a busy place. It'll give you a serious respect for anyone in the service industry who keeps a smile on their face. You'll get real tired of drunks. You'll get real tired of blacks trying to get free shit, if you work in a diverse area. You'll get real tired of underage idiots who don't realize how obvious they are. If you're a decent looking guy, you'll get real tired of middle-aged women and gay dudes hitting on you. I don't know how women do it; the creepy dudes are never-ending. Then again, I've seen shitty female bartenders with no skill or personality make bank because they have big tits, so I guess it's a trade off. You'll also have conversations with some of the most interesting people you'll ever meet, if you're talkative.

You'll probably have a weird schedule, leading to a social life surrounded mostly by other bartenders and various other career misfits with a similar schedule. They're all drunks, and half of them are on drugs as well. Even at the upscale places. You'll either become like them, or burn out.

I burnt out after a few years. I barely drink anymore, but I keep it simple when I do. I like a rusty nail, Fireball and Dr. Pepper, or just some Irish whiskey and soda.

Don't get a bartender gf. 99% are total whores who will never be fit for a committed relationship again.

Tipped wages means I get paid way less than minimum wage (barely over $5 in my state, compared to the $10 I'd make otherwise). The "paid training" is what I'm calling the job, they don't consider it that. But I did catch on my paychecks before my managers changed my pay rate they were not only paying me federal tipped wage (which is like $2/hr) they also weren't properly making up the difference to minimum wage. My GM told them immediately that I was about to quit over that and I had a check printed with what they owed me the next day.
But for sure I need a better job, I just have really flexible hours here because they know no one else will work there.

>It's like a halfway point between being a babysitter and a drug dealer.

Alcohol is a ridiculously dangerous drug that makes people completely retarded, and one of your main jobs as a barkeep is to make sure this NPC turds don't end up hurting themselves or killing someone after they leave, and then your bar being found liable for it. At the first place I worked we allowed kids in (it was a bowling alley / arcade / laser tag place that also happened to have a full bar) and I swear to god I must have saved a lot of those little shits from going through car windscreens, because while they were off playing the parents would just sit at the bar sucking down margaritas and irish car bombs with no attempt whatsoever to stay sober enough to get behind the wheel, so naturally I always had to cut them off, and then they'd throw a big hissy fit. I was a bartender at a really oldschool german hofbrau that had 20+ taps of local craft and a full alcohol bar. the clientele was mostly 70+ years old so I got pretty used to making old fashioned, cosmos, tom collins, etc.

a man came in once (with his caretaker) and asked us to blend his meal, I believe a turkey + mashed potato dinner, in our margarita blender so that he could drink it because he couldn't chew.

I also had a woman with (I hope) dementia who came in during the middle of a weekday shift and wouldn't stop talking about how she murdered her last two husbands.

thursday nights were "banjo nights" where a local group of 20-30 banjo players would come in and play the same 10 songs for their geriatric crowd.

overall it was a parttime gig for me and pretty fun/casual. I learned how to make a bunch of drinks and learn the local beer community. now I work in beer fulltime and haven't been there in 5 or so years? food was bomb though.

This sounds pretty wholesome. I was going to say I assume it was a nicer and more peaceful night to work (ignoring the obvious comparison to the weekend shifts, instead other weekdays) but then I became capable of rational thought and realised a bunch of old drunk guys can probably get quite irate and rowdy. It got a bit cramped and loud with that many banjos in a medium sized space but it was never too crazy. They celebrated many 90th and 100th bdays there, and the old people loved it. I've mostly freelanced over the years, so I barely had any regulars and I saw very different crowds
at a small pool party there was this girl who had that "I'm better than you and I know it" look about her, very sheltered it seemed, and when she arrived at the bar she read the menu, which contained no vodka lemons nor long islands, and with the utmost confidence she said "I only drink gin lemons or long islands"
that was a small party and the organizer wanted to spend as little as possible, so I discussed with her that I wouldn't even buy lemons, just limes and oranges, and I politely explained that I didn't have the ingredients to do either of those drinks
she, without beating an eye, repeated "well, I only drink gin lemons or long islands"
I ended up making her a long island with orange juice instead of the triple sec and some bottled ice tea instead of the lemon, and her comment was something like, "see? it wasn't very difficult, was it?"

another one was when I tried to get a stable position at a bar, I told the owner, who I know was looking for staff, that I had years of experience with making drinks, organizing events and so on, but I barely had any experience as a barista
he insisted it would be fine, that he really only needed someone making drinks during cocktail hour and diner hours, so I went there with dress pants and a nice shirt, I like to believe I treated the clients nicely, addressed them politely and did what was asked of me, which mostly consisted in cleaning, serving tables, making coffee, and cleaning more
at the end of the day I went to the owner, we had a chat and I told him there had to have been a misunderstanding, because I had cleaned most of the time I was there and made I think 3 cocktails in one sunday
the owner promptly replied that he thought I would be more experienced with making coffee and serving tables, and that I was definitely too formal in the way I addressed clients, "like [I was] working in an office"
I got paid €48 per 8h of work, wished him good luck and promptly fucked off
this is how bartenders are treated in mostly all places here, by bar owners and clients alike

another one was when I was doing some promotions for Diageo, this one is funny though
an old man, at least 80y/o was there, and so I offered him to try a drink, but he went
>ah no, I can't, doctor's orders
>it's because I have heart problems
>I also can't eat red meat
>or drive too fast
>or smoke, certainly not
>or stay awake for more than x hours
>or yada yada
at some point I got bored and replied
>allright but can you at least fuck?
he then understood I was there working and went on his way

another one, same place, similar time
a good looking 30-some german woman approached me and I offered her a drink in english, then started highlighting the peculiarities of what I offered, she drank it and a (probably) swiss man, 30-some, well kept and well dressed, approached me too and started making small talk with the girl in german
the woman went on her way, the man kept looking until she disappeared, and after finishing his drink he turned to me, saying, in my language with just a slight accent, the equivalent of "fucking hot she was eh? you mind if we switch places for a couple hours?"
took me quite a lot of strength not to burst out laughing, and I offered him some more expensive alcohol

being a bartender has its moments but it's overall not nearly as romantic as the stories make it seem, I can't recommend it, in fact I actively discourage anybody I know from doing it, at least here
I was never one to smoke regularly, so to manage the stress most mornings I just looked at a picture of an anime girl saying "Wake up wageslave, time to put on that customer service smile and go get this bread", punched a wall, locker, drawer or some such, and went on to make drinks and manage customers, though I doubt I could have made it if I didn't have the very high self esteem I have

Amusing stories, thanks for sharing. I can totally relate to entitled customers and weird attitudes about things you can't control. Sometimes acquiescing in the "wrong" way - like when you made a not-quite-Long Island iced tea - is just all it takes. Especially if they don't really know what they're talking about but just want you to serve them. I doubt she knew the ingredients of a long island or had drank enough to recognise it was very different (orange juice? the whole look of the drink would be massively different, nevermind the taste, it's fucking opaque now lol). Same with people just wasting your time, but sometimes they just want someone to talk to. Not what most people get paid for unfortunately.
>punched a wall, locker, drawer or some such
Sounds you were really stressed. Or maybe had a bit of an issue. Hope your situation is better than it was then. Any job that interacts with customers is horrible at times, really easy to get annoyed or just feel like shit because of some asshole treating you like you're scum when you're just trying to make a living. We give them what they ask for, to the best of what the business allows, yet some are never happy.

It's comfy as fuck. The game literally tells you to grab a nice drink and sit back while you play it. At the start of each day you get to choose the songs played from its jukebox (ingame music, not your own) and it just makes for this great experience of sitting back, mixing drinks and talking to customers. You get your own options on answers and when you mix drinks its done manually - you can purposely get people more drunk for different results and other stuff. If you want something where you can sit back and play with just a mouse while having a nice comfy boozey night, I 100% recommend it. Depression curing tier.

Aussie bartender here.
Also did bartending in Japan.

in countries with tipping you cant get a bartending job unless your resume already has 30 years of bar experience, and even then you'll get relegated to dishwasher or line cook so they can give the job to a big tiddie 18yo blonde girl.

in normal countries, it's just a typical low-paying hospitality job no different to waiting tables or what have you. if your pub is busy with average working or young types then you have to deal with noise, fights and spew.
if it's an upscale hipster joint then business is slower which can fuck your hours.
ideally you want to work in a local country pub but again, good luck waiting 40 years for the old cunt who works there to die of old age so the position opens up.

bartending in Japan was completely different. no mess, no fights, customers extremely polite, customers bring gifts/cakes/snacks for the bartender from time to time. also the drinking culture there you, as the bartender, are expected to match drinking pace with your customers. talking, lending an ear, hooking people up and being the town's gossip is easily 80% of the job of bartending in Japan.
only shit thing was the pay was awful and you had to deal with constant cigarette smoke (they still smoke in bars/restaurants in asia).
was worth it to get fucked up for free every weekend though.
other shit part of bartending in Japan is being hungover as shit every day.

before 'rona i was considering opening my own bar in Japan but glad I didnt.

one day i'd love to own my own little bar attached to the side of a backpacker's hostel in a beach town.

Less than posts imply but drug abuse is totally a thing. I think that and the tattoos come from the socialite or rebel aspect of a lot of people who end up in this job. Like if you go through life enjoying substances with people and doing crazy things, then you find a job where you can do that and get paid, of course you're gonna like it. Most of your job is conversing with other people who are having fun after all.

Any bros here regularly drink at bars? I mostly drink at breweries these days and I used to be the night manager at one but, yes, you can meet people and strike up conversation. Might depend a bit on the area a bit though; I don’t live in a diversity meme area. But alcohol tends to get the lips moving for most people and you can meet interesting people. The main downside is if you’re in the bar and someone who you don’t recognize knows your name and some things about you—so evidently you chatted before but you don’t remember it. Very odd feeling.

no particular stories.
the bar i worked at in japan was a dirty old dive. only 4-5 seats, but on a friday night we'd easily fit in 20-30 people shoulder to shoulder (def a fire hazard but japan doesnt care about shit like that).
on the busiest nights people woul djust drink on the street in front of the bar too and sometimes block traffic.
other bars in the city hated us, especially the fancy English pub around the corner and the fancy wine bar upstairs, mostly cuz we were the only 5/5 star google rated bar in town and easily pulled the most customers.

I miss the regulars. A few of them knew that I would make drinks that none of the other staff knew how to make, so they'd tip me generously (tipping in bar culture in japan means the customers buy the bartender drinks, I get to drink the drink and pocket that money for myself instead of putting it in the till).

95% of the drink orders would be
>draught beer
>vodka redbull or jaeger redbull (we'd premix it instead of doing the jaeger bomb shit, heavily cut down on the amount of dishes that needed doing
>gin tonic
>whisky highball
>the occasional moscow mule

I used to get about 900yen/hour cash in hand for a night's work. Was pretty shit money, especially considering the train cost me about 2000yen every shift.
but i more than made up for it by getting drunk for free every weekend.

Our bar didnt even have a cash register, just a cash box.
Doing math and calculating change for a 7-person drink order is fucking hard when you're smashed.

One of the best parts was watching our bar's token Nyuu-Haafu (ie: tranny, but he was pretty convincing and a top dude) get hit on by drunk dudes.
One time we had a pair of Swedish businessmen in the bar, one was gay and got a crush for tranny-chan. Whole bar was playing cupid for them that night. Heaps of fun.

The worst part was winter from New Years until end of Feb.
Almost no customers. So many shifts sitting there drinking alone.

fancy cocktail bar?
nah it's mostly couples on dates or maybe groups of middle-aged women gossiping.
a family pub that's more 90% restaurant than bar?
nah, again, small clusters of friends or families that want to be left alone as they eat their nachos or chicken parma.

college bar?
bar with D&D/board game nights?
bar with live music that isnt just some cunt on a guitar?
bar with quiz nights and bingo nights?
yeah thats the bar where people drink and make friends with randoms.

also day of the week plays a factor too.
I live in a tourist town now so every bar is normal every night, but in some cities I lived in... Mon~Wed nights in bars would be mainly chefs, sex workers and the REAL alcoholics would be the only ones going out on those nights.
Fri-Sat nights are usually when you wanna go out if you wanna socialise with randoms.

Again, just depends on the bars and bar culture in your area.

if you can work at a wine bar, even better, as it's usually better clientele, bigger tabs, and better tips
I'm autistic and usually ignore people's names, but if you remember the names of regulars they will tip you better. You might also find yourself getting better at not being autistic, if that's something you're trying to work on.

Women coworkers are largely catty, high-stress, and likely to take it out on you. Men coworkers are largely more friendly and more composed but also more likely on some substance.

It's not a bad gig if you can prevent yourself from getting swept up in all of the degeneracy that comes with all service jobs, lots of junkies.

>How to pick up cute bartender lady?

First off, don't. They're not good for relationships, being whores 99% of the time. If you just want a hookup, that's easier... but 1/2 of them are serious cunts, despite the nice service personality they have at work. The other 1/2 are crazy, and you know you shouldn't put your dick in crazy. Save yourself the trouble - this industry seriously breaks women.

That being said, if you still won't listen, there are a few ways to hook up with your average qt bartender.

1) Sell whatever drug they're into.

2) Be extremely good looking and fun, or present yourself like you've got serious money to have fun with. If you've got a boat to take them on when they have a day off, you're in. Just make the move at that point.

3) Be around them for long enough without creeping them out. These women are whores, and will eventually fuck all the guys around them that are up to their standards. The easiest way to do this is to work with them and socialize with the staff that hang out together. In the service industry, a significant portion of most bar/restaurant staff has fucked other staff. If you're their manager, you'll have an easier time. If you're enough of a regular and socialize well that you get to know the whole crew, you might eventually join the socializing and then it'll happen too, though this is less common.

4) Be some "cool" profession, like a well-known local musician or something.

5) If they stay in the industry after they become a single mother, you often can catch them just by being the guy who will put up with their bullshit and still house them / play daddy.

But really, just don't.
