Yep.
My local store also has a Store Select maker's mark that seems interesting. It focuses on roasty, charred staves that appeal to me, and against the typical maker's profile I can imagine would be pretty great. $70 for bourbon stops me in my tracks, though

The past two weeks I went to the food store, Wild Turkey 101 has been out of stock.

It's one of the largest liquor stores in North Houston, I refuse to believe it's just a stocking issue.

They had plenty of 80 proof Turkey, which is shit.

Hold me, bros, I'm afraid they're trying to get rid of the 101. It's one of my favorite bottles, nothing compares. There's something special in it that wrecks your shit because I can drink Old Granddad 114 and go to work the next day, but if I drink 101, I've got to spend a half hour trying to find my phone and then cringing that I created an OKCupid profile and contacted a bunch of hoes.

I really, really hope they aren't about to do away with it.

on my 5th or 6th pour of Johnny Black and man... its like the most okayist scotch ive ever had. leaves my mouth dry but with no flavor, its annoying and the nose has become pretty flat and virtually flavorless, ice is nice but water did nothing :/

been looking everywhere for anything Campbeltown for a couple months and its all gone. Glendronach was supposed to arrive at the start of the month and its allegedly "not even left the boat yet" so maybe closer to November for that. But birthday is soon so I'm picking up a few bottles in the next few days/weeks time. Yes. Bourbon has standards which make it taste the same. You have to use 51% corn, you have to use new oak barrels to age them in (although, there's brands which finish in other types of barrels).

You can find a good value in bourbon because of that. A $45 bottle of bourbon will taste 85% of a $100 bottle bourbon.

This is a stark difference compared to Rum, where there aren't official standards established -- I only know Rhum Agricole being tightly monitored

This is one of the things people talk about when you get older and 30 is kind of the first marker after which people start notice things like this and random aches and pains. Drinking tons of water when you're drinking gets you only so far and then eventually nowhere at all.
Take care of your body, man, you only get one and this will only get worse. I've had older people tell me that all my life and I never really understood it until I became a fat alcoholic and things started getting worse very fast. So I've been a casual bourbon drinker. Always drink it neat. Fav is probably Eagle Rare or Four Roses Single Barrel.

Anyways, I bought a bottle of Lagavulin 16 Year for like $100.00.

It's good... I get it... but is it 2x or 3x my fav bourbons good? I really don't think so.

Is Lagavulin just marketing hype or something? Or do I need to stick with scotches to get more appreciation? I have sneaky suspicion I'll like Johnnie Black Label at 1/3 the price nearly as much as the Laga.

it's a good start but you can't use it 1:1 for drinking. Sherry influence has a wide range. For example, I love Uigeadail and aberlour abundah, but I hate glenfarclas and macallan. So far no one has been able to explain where that difference in sherry flavor between the glenfarclas and abundah is from. One guy suggested the fact that it's cask strength, but that's not it. Glenfarclas is like, cloyingly sweet, whereas abundah is sweet and spicy.

This may largely be because they put the proof in the title so they can't water it down on you. The chart sucks.
Particularly in terms of peat and sherry.
The objective peat levels of whiskies are published. This chart does not align with that at all. Nor do my tasting notes. And there's some stuff that is peated that's in the unpeated section.
I don't know where the sherry scores came from. You've got barely sherried stuff at the top of the chart, moderately sherried stuff not in the sherry section, stuff that is known to contain sherry completely in the light side.

But to start with the axis are wrong.
Rich and light are opposed, but you can't say sherry and fruit = rich. Most speysides are fruity, a little sherried, and very light.
And the center of the chart marks the point where whisky is unpeated. So why is there anything on the right half of the chart? Are they claiming soft is the opposite of peat? Soft usually means non-tannic, though it probably means non-prickly here since tannic whisky is rare. Given that definition there is no place for lagavulin which is soft and peated or aberlour abundha which is prickly and unpeated.

You're better off with shapes on a flavor wheel because you haven't introduced falsely mutually exclusive flavors. Only problem is you can't put multiple on a chart and a flavor wheel is likely to have no relationship to your enjoyment. It's probably most useful to just have a list of good whiskies for each in a list of categories.

Which one? I had the 12 and my opinion was how sure are you that this has any sherry content at all? Tbh the more I hear about Glenfarclas the more I assume I had a bad bottle.

Anyway. For A'bundha the sweetness mostly comes from the spirit itself. A'bundha Alba (the same spirit bourbon matured) is even sweeter, but it's not spicy at all, so that came from the barrel.

FINALLY. Bros where do I begin... My first sip of 24 year old Timorous Beastie is literally emotive. Its fresh baked pretzel aroma takes me back to my childhood. initial and mid palate is big time malt madness, sweet and rich. slight hints of dried cinnamon and luscious black current jam are the perfect finish, a finish that nearly outstays its welcome, but just when you think its too long it gives way to the creamy almond and wood accents. Zero alcohol notes to be found in the nose or taste. Absolutely impeccable dram and Douglas Laing is a modern day saint.

The Madeira finished Irish is interesting. So far I've only compared it to the Bushmills 10, but plan to try it next to the Glenmorangie 14 Quinta Ruban tomorrow as Port and Madeira are said to be quite similar. From memory it is on the right path, more dense than the Bushmills and the bourbon maturation less profound. Nose and palate are both bubble gum sweetness contrasting with dark choclate(very nice balance) and a fruit note that I'm unsure of but reminds me of raspberry or kiwi. finish is a little spicy, like a pickled clove, but I also get the most minute amount of wisping kerosene lamp being extinguished in the spring at the very end, somehow not displeasing. Overall I am happy as both were well worth the time and money.

My favorite whisky bar is good on pricing. And by good I mean the standard 1/8th of a bottle for a 30ml shot. I usually get half pours, share them with a friend, and try 40 on an evening.

Eat that price two or three times a year and you'll end up never having to take a risk again. If it weren't for the lockdowns lasting so long I'd be able to buy on sale whisky that I had tried and enjoyed before exclusively.

That said, of the 7 bottles I have now, I have tried something from each of those distilleries so it's not like I'm taking wild gambles. Except for that one bottle of Tomatin I accidentally bought because I tried a Tomintul (it's fantastic though).

There are 40% bottlings that are better than 46% bottlings. There are chill filtered bottles better than non chill filtered bottles. Stop writing a bottle off for not being as good as it can be, when it's still better than its competition.
Don't buy a Loch Lomond 46% NCF uncoloured unless it's actually better than the same priced Caol Ila 12, Talisker 10, Dalwhinnie 15, etc (I say as if current Loch Lomond prices aren't inflated as fuck atm, look at your own market).

For real though Loch Lomond (12&18) is one of only two whiskies I've had that I would consider inherently flawed. It's too fucking bitter. With Inchmoan it's in balance, but otherwise give it a miss. Apparently I liked a High Spirits bottling of Loch Lomond 12 though.

the majority is hype/marketing. only technicality in its favor is if you want a mid aged peat focused bottle around $100-$125, but the actual maturation is probably younger feeling than even Ardbeg's NAS range. easy rule of thumb is to stay away once celebs become attached to something because its a sign of low quality at a premium.

flavor can change in a bottle over time, but usually not degrading to the point where its become undrinkable though. if you plan on having a bottle open for years you can look into wine gas that will neutralize the atmosphere, stopping oxidation/evaporation of the alcohol. if your cork is slightly loose you can tape the seem or use shrink wrap, to aid further "spoiling".

My friends and I had a whisky tasting group. 5 of us with ~30 bottles open at a time. That was problematic, especially since that number seemed to be ever growing.
