my vote is the Italian-American spaghetti and meatballs.

Obviously the answer is the burger. I'm not joking, nor am I American, but isn't that rather obvious? The more interesting question would be what other iconic American foods there are.

Speaking of which, I know that it's apparently a very American food, but I never encounter that anywhere in pop culture nor on the Internet. The only reason I know this is because Wikipedia told me so. What gives?

Have you not had apple pie at McDonalds? Have you not seen this movie?

Mhm, I see. No, I haven't had apple pie at McDonald's, should I? And I don't intend to watch that movie, though it did cross my mind when thinking about the American quality of apple pie. So the title does refer to that indeed, interesting.

PIZZA.
Again:
PIZZA.
Nobody outside Italy gives a shit about their ghetto pizza that looks like a fucking lunchable pizza with an added basil leaf and stuck into an oven for a minute.
American pizza chains (notably dominos) are present in literally every country on the fucking planet, with the few exceptions being:
>countries with which American companies are forbidden from doing “legal” business because embargo
>countries which do not have a recognized currency, and literally have nothing else in their barren shithole valuable enough to exchange for a pizza

As far as the world (at least the parts that matter) are concerned, American-style pizza is the default standard pizza, and “authentic” pizza is a novelty curio at best.
