I prefer onion rings but I think fries are more versatile. Onion rings can be a bit much when eaten with other fried food. Having 2 battered items in one meal feels too greasy. I like onion rings with burgers or sandwiches but I wouldn't want to eat them with fried chicken or fish.

French fries, while still being fried, feel a bit lighter and pair better with fried chicken or fish.
