Usually the old country pubs have this homely, very quaint atmosphere. Very old buildings, usually you have to duck your head to get in. It's dark, smokey and warm with a fireplace and always has a welcoming smell of proper homemade food, it's not a place to get absolutely fucked up in but rather to enjoy a few pints with your mates, people are usually open to just shoot the shit with and all in all it's /comfy/ as fuck.
You can't really compare them with say a weatherspoons or a regular bar. Usually they're the local place for people in the village and thus a community is centered around it. If you want some cheap booze then there are plenty of other larger places or fuck even a simple social club where beer is sold for fucking pennies.

Old man bar two blocks down from my apartment is nice. It's quiet, Saturday is karaoke night so I can listen to old couples sing love songs to each other and that's cute as fuck, and they got an outdoor patio with a tin roof. My favorite thing to do is go there when it's raining or lightly storming and listen to the rain on the tin roof and then watch the lightning out across the sky. Peak comfy.

Second favorite is a bar on the college strip about 5 minutes up the road which is a bar with two DJ booths that play white and black people club music in two separate rooms. I usually go there on Thursday night/Friday morning at 1-ish am when I get off work and forgot to use my lunch break to buy booze for the weekend. Bartender and his girlfriend are nice as fuck, remembered me and my drink of choice after only one weekend, and the third time in the guy went, "The usual?". Nice fucking people and incredible service. I really do enjoy going there even though I fucking HATE clubs and club music of all kinds. Would gladly tip and pay for over-priced drinks there. Good people. They keep me coming back.

I was in a pub in Glasgow about 8 years ago that didn't have a ladies toilet. Technically it did, but they used it as a storeroom, it was full of boxes and crates of beer and stuff. It was just such an incredibly rough pub in such a bad area that women just didn't go into it, ever.
You can get away with a lot more in the remote pubs. Even in smaller towns like Oban, I seen a guy rolling a joint at the bar in front of staff on a busy Saturday night, they didn't care.
Some will specialise in certain areas, it's not uncommon for some pubs in the highlands to have dozens of scotches on sale, a pub in london you might get three macro beers and a cider, depending on the place. San Miguel is everywhere in London for some reason.

I live in a small coastal town in scotland, the pub used to also unironically be the best place to buy baby formula until the supermarkets started putting security tags on it to stop the junkies from stealing it
some of the pubs near me were open at the weekends throughout lockdown when it was illegal. it was kind of cool actually because they let you smoke inside which is also illegal because people smoking outside would attract too much attention
