Chiba-Ken is probably the best casual Japanese food in Waikiki and that's saying something. Also, I like to go to the Japanese Village in the bottom of the Ala Moana because it's a good place to get cheap jap beer on draft and the place next to Don Quixote makes good okonomiyaki.

there are few of these in the states, so chances are you haven’t been to a CoCo Ichibanya. It’s a Japanese curry chain, there’s one in Pearl City. I strongly recommend you check it out, it’s really good. I suggest getting curry rice with chicken katsu, a fried egg, and a croquette on the side.

Oh yeah, CoCoIchi is great. I like a level 8 pork katsu (minced beef is good too) with eggplant and an egg.

Steak Shack on waikiki if you're there, it's AWESOME. Like I'm a simple guy and it's just marinated meat off a griddle with stickyrice and springmix. But it just tastes fucking good. I'm a pleb and I could suggest other pleb-memories I enjoyed, like the rainbow-grill and Da Ono Hawaiian. I did some nasty shit when I was in Honolulu, man, don't get me started.

Obviously you need to eat poke. If you're going there and have people local who know good places, get them to take you to local poke places. Personally I like Keeamoku Seafood but I don't know if they're even still there because I haven't been back in 3 years, and I haven't gone to the famous celebrity poke shops. For cheap grocery poke, Foodland poke is what a lot of locals eat, but I always found Foodland fish to be very soft compared to poke from Times, and Safeway has absolutely the tastiest, freshest grocery store poke but it's expensive.

Itchy Butt is also really good Korean fried chicken for cheap.

They have on in Ala Moana. Never been, and usually there isn't a line there, but it's by the food court.

Everyone usually goes straight for Shirokiya Japanese Village Walk but I don't know if it's open due to covid-19. It's really cool how they mimic Japanese food stalls and you can get all kinds of delicious freshly-made Japanese and Hawaiian-Japanese food there. Much better than the old Shirokiya food court on the 3rd floor, but there's still that bakery up there so you can get genuine Japanese pastries. If Saint-Germain were still around I'd recommend that but they shut down more than 10 years ago.

There's a Jollibees in Ala Moana and by the Home Depot at Dillingham if you want to try Filipino McDonalds.

If you can find a dedicated musubi restaurant, get some. Hawaiian musubi is a very different beast from Japanese musubi and it's delicious. 7-11 is fine in a pinch for all kinds of Hawaiianized foods, including musubi and manapua, but dedicated eateries are always better.

Does anyone know of a good Korean plate lunch place? My family always went to Peppa's which is a good chain with delicious banchan and mac salad, but is it really among the best in Honolulu?

Also if you want to have Korean BBQ, Yakiniku Seoul is a great, if pricey, option. Waikiki has cheaper options.

Here's some good local places:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gMGe_QsrCI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_R3SxvCZiiE
You should also make the effort to wake up at 8AM and drive down to Leonard's Malasada. Malasada's are da best donuts in America. There's a good poke place down there as well, `Ono Seafood, that my cousins swear by, and other good local eats along Kapahulu Street there.

For more traditional stuff like the luau food, I guess Helena's is a good choice. Only heard about it, never been there myself.

Chinatown used to have some delicious restaurants but nowadays I don't know anything specific. It's always a good place to get genuine Chinese, Vietnamese, or Thai food though. Mauna Kea market (didn't use to be called that, that's definitely not what I remember the name being) used to have some great small Chinese stalls in its food court at the back of the market.
Lee's Bakery is good traditional Chinese pastries. The Mandalay is Downtown but it is delicious for dim sum and has good traditional Chinese food options for dinner; however, you'll be underdressed in trunks and t-shirt.

Phở Trí Vietnamese Restaurant is where my parents love going for Vietnamese pho.

Don Quijote has some great food stalls outside the store as well but I'm sure it's really changed up since I was last there.

And of course, if you want REALLY Hawaiian food, go to Zippy's. Order the chili and rice, have some katsu, and buy a guava cake from Napoleon's after.

>>16737353
More on Ala Moana: Just walk the entire mall and eat as you go. there's tons of food there. And Nijiya Market just outside it has Japanese food for a little cheaper than Shirokiya.

>>16737360
Hey, that's what they named it. There's also a Yakiniku Pyeongyang in Waikiki. Maybe it's because Hawaii was a hotspot for Japanese tourists 30 years ago so they wanted something recognizable.

I had a good meal at Lee Ho Fuk's. It's all the way in the ghetto-ass part of Chinatown where the concrete is crumbling into the river, the old men are gambling and drinking in public and spitting on the sidewalk and you start to feel like the homeless might mug you if you don't shell out.

I went to Maui and this restaurant called monkey pod was fucking 10/10. If you ever there, get the strawberry lemonade and then get the strawberry pie (or any pie) at the end. The burger and the macadamia crusted fish were both top tier.

They have a location in Oahu I believe, definitely check it out.

Do yourself a huge fucking favor and head for Sweet Home Cafe. Authentic Taiwanese hot pot with a nice selection of ingredients and you get a giant shaved ice with some nice stuff mixed in for free at the end. Parking sucks dick as it does everywhere there, but try your luck. There is also an Asian brothel over on young street if that's still there around Waikiki. $200 or so I've heard.

Has nothing to do with suffocation*. The sharing of breath, or aloha, is tied to the term haole. One who does not share our breath means one who does not share our culture - an outsider. Not saying hawaiians aren't violent ogres, but at least get the semantics right.
