So not only has our President presided over massive inflation, stagnant job growth, and sold our energy security to international interests, we are also running low on meat.

What's the strategy for cheap protein in such a situation?

Egg prices are also going up and there's huge shortages. Most of the grocery stores around me usually have empty egg shelves and one of them moved the eggs to a smaller section that used to be just the butter section. And this is in the farming Midwest.

I have a job but I'm cheap as fuck. Call me Ebenezer.

I used to go to the Chinese market to buy pig blood curd, but even that's expensive. I went last weekend thinking I could get some of it for a cheap week but the curd is about 60% of the old size and selling for the same price it was in January.

Beans and rice is carbs though. And I already went through my peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches diet a few years back.

It's still chicken, just get it in bulk and don't be afraid of thighs or grabbing ye olde costco rotisserie. There's still major logistics problems, but chicken farmers can adjust a lot quicker than beef and pork farmers who have to plan quite a while ahead. $2.75 a pound for chicken breasts at costco isn't a bad deal.

I've never seen a shortage of anything outside of toilet paper during the initial phases of the lockdown. I don't know if it's because I live in a major transportation hub on the west coast so we get first crack at the shipments that get unloaded, but my Winco always has plenty of everything. I have noticed the increase in meat prices though.

If you're in the hub, this is what's saving you. A large part of the shortages have been truck drivers. Even in my somewhat largish mid-west market, we've seen the price increases but when we're out of things at the store it's logistics.

And no, it wasn't the wind turbines, it was the lack of regulation.

Make friends with someone who raises chickens and or goats.

If you live far enough out in the country, buy a pig/sheep/cow direct from a rancher.

Season licenses for small game like rabbits are relatively cheap, and you can take a couple rabbits a day.

Same with fish, get a fishing license, and fish your local river or lake.

It's too late in the year to get most big game hunting tags, but you can usually by general tags for deer all through the fall. More competition in general areas, but still could be worth a shot.

Stock up on dry beans and rice, which makes a complete protein. Add ins like chilies, onions, etc are cheap and are even something you can grow inside yourself (as long as your apartment has a window).

And finally, shop bulk deals on big packages of cheap meat. Buy whole chickens and other fowl. Use every fucking scrap.

Basically, we need to relearn how to eat the way our grandparents/great grandparents did.
