People like to compare him to Hunter S. Thompson. Not surprising given the poor literary experiences and knowledge of the average schlub: who else do they have in their mental list of familiar authors, Stephen King, James Patterson, George R.R. Unironically "Down and Out in Paris and London" by Orwell captured the inside of the service industry really well if you've ever worked in it.

Making of a Chef by Ruhlman is pretty good. If you like it, he did a couple other books about chefs which were good (Reach of a Chef and Soul of a Chef)

Life, on the Line by Achatz is a good chef’s memoir with twists and turns

Sous Chef: 24 Hours on the Line was an interesting concept and fun, but was also a realistic look at a chef’s daily life

Blood, Bones & Butter by Gabby Hamilton is well written and a good read.

Heat by Bill Buford was ok. Deals with a newb becoming a professional chef, so it might be relevant.
