Why the FUCK is crab meat so expensive? Holy shit. So, I woke up this morning, I thought, I haven't had a good crab cake in a while, surely making them my own is cheaper than buying them at a restaurant! I drive to my local supermarket to find.... That the average price of crab meat is about $40 a pound. Huh? According to recipes one pound will get me 6 crab cakes. So with that cost, lets say factoring in the cheap other ingredients it is about $7 a crabcake. And you will need at least two, so $14 a person. Maybe a skimp out and just serve it with salad. I would still be down like $60 for 4 people! Just for crab cakes!
Seems a little crazy to me.
>tldr
Why is crabmeat so expensive? What does it cost you where you live? Is there a cheaper way to get it? Do I buy the whole crabs and get the meat myself?

No idea, had the same experience today in NE US. I wanted to make crabcakes and they were selling crab meat for $50 a pound.

I bought a half pound of lobster meat for $15, still not cheap, but whatever it's Friday night.

I blame Biden

A 6oz can of crab meat at my closest Fred Meyer is $5.59 at this exact moment. So like $16/lb. $8.99/lb for crab still in the shell. That's pretty typical for crab prices. Isn't it a little early for crab season anyway?

I live a West coast liberal shithole btw (Portland).

I'm landlocked so I don't eat seafood except shitty fucking tilapia, catfish, trout on special occasion, and frozen crap.
I do know a restauranteur on Hawaii who shuttered because he can't get decent lobster for a decent price anymore.

Supply, demand.
Also scarcity of meat per crab. There's probably like 30 whole crabs worth of meat in there. Also, another factor is only certain crabs can be picked, and shelf life isn't as long as other foods.

It's a giant combination of a bunch of 'on the cusp' of things.

Crabs are fucking useless animals. i resent their presence. they dont deserve to breathe the same air as me. i detest seeing, hearing, or smelling them. they are not worthy of a level of consciousness. truly peasants. they should be harnessed to till the fields for crops. truly the lowest of the low. i hate crabs.

should have known the crab apologists would be out in full force. crabs do breathe air and are a direct contributor to global warming based on the co2 that they produce. they regularly cut underwater cables because they are so stupid, mistaking them for prey. this has caused a sharp spike in the price of teflon, a material that is used. crabs are fucking retarded and should be erradicated as a species. luckily, steps have been put in place by french guiana, in a 2014 study presented to the UN

Logistics chains are having to ramp back up and because of all the gibmedats from the last year nobody is filling the labor shortages, so unless you live right next to a processing plant it's going to cost a fortune.
I live in a heavy agriculture state so eggs are still $1/dozen and milk is $2.70/gal, but other places its $4-7/gal because there's nobody to move it from here to there
