The only upside is that they are very cheap and easy to make so even chinese peasants can have basic hygiene and not eat with their hands.

But they are objectively inferior eating utensils to the western cutlery. Just look at japanese cuisine. They limit themselves to food that can be picked up by wooden sticks. Meanwhile western cuisine enjoys food in all shapes and forms.
