Costco can afford to sell them this cheap for the same reason they can sell their rotisserie chickens for dirt cheap: absurdly massive purchasing power and a firm control over supply lines. They're not being sold "at a loss".

I'm not convinced by this. The operating costs associated with selling the $1.50 hot dog and drink include employee salaries, equipment and maintenance, square footage of the kitchen and dining area, etc. If it were so easy to sell a hot dog and pop for $1.50 and actually make money on the transaction without any other source of revenue, then why does no one else do this? I have to assume McDonalds has purchasing power and supply chain control equal to or better than Costco, so where's the McDogger + Coke?
