I just came back from 20 days in Italy. I am a big /ck/ fag and naturally I wanted to indulge in a country whose cuisine has conquered the world. Yet eating out in Italy was simply average, if not subpar, and disappointing. Especially in Bologna, muh food capital.

>Service
Service in Italy was absolute shit. The servers seemed to hate their lives and their jobs with a passion. They were typically grey-haired men in their 50s, who would often smoke while working. They would do mistakes like turning their back on you while ordering to speak to colleagues, sighing loudly and in general be very slow. They would bring out cold bread (no spreads), and crackers in their supermarket packaging -wtf-. Ironically, they would all wear white collared shirts and bow-ties, but acted like their wife didn’t suck their dick in 10 years. Speaking Italian to them wouldn’t help at all. Inb4 anyone accuses me of being American, I am not, I am a med, and even by my standards service was bad.

>Trattorias, Osterias
Food here was good-ish, I made good effort to keep away from tourist areas, and used /trv/’s suggestions which despite the memes always turn out good. Service ranged from crap to okay. However, for the full experience you were supposed to order antipasto (~5-10€), primo (a pasta, ~10€), secondo (meat or fish, ~15-25 €) and dolce (~5€). For the second course you are paying for the protein only, and side (polenta, potatoes is extra, ~5€). Add drinks and a bullshit “cover charge”, you end up with 60€ per person. You can have a great 3-course, steak and lobster meal with that, in the centre of London. Yet in Italy, you pay that in no-aircondition Jacomo’s trattoria for

>Food which is mediocre
“The food in Italy is so good” is a meme parroted by YouTube faggot vloggers. For one, it was evident they were very anal about the “original recipe”. I went to fucking carrefour one night and got guanchale, parm, eggs, and cream. The autist at checkout told me, in broken English and without me mentioning anything, “no cream in carbonara, no cream”. You can tell this creates a culture which looks down upon experimenting. The result? Take Rome. Every place serves only cacio e pepe, gricia and carbonara, ALL the same give or take one ingredient or two. And amatriciana, which is just meh.

>Hotel breakfast
3-star or 4-star hotel, didn’t matter, breakfast was always crap:
Bread, jam in plastic containers airline-style, nutella
Croissants (just crescent shaped bread, no butter, no flaky, no crisp)
Sliced supermarket cheese, ham, only boiled egg.
Cereal dispenser, boxed juice, long shelf-life milk.

>International food
Absolute TRASH too, superbly bad, as expected. Only resorted to that since food places were closed between 3-7pm.

There is a very good reason faggots like Mark Wiens and Trevor James almost never check-out Europe. Is French food as big of a meme? I must know.

Also, FUCK Trenitilia for having no airconditioning in 40 ᵒC, that was so fucking third-world. They even screwed the trains’ windows with loose screws so that you couldn’t open them. Fuck them.

Yeah man. I walked into one place and the 5'2" grey haired waiter said to me as snooty as possible "do you have a reservation?" I'm like "why are you full?" the whole dining room starts laughing at him. He is showing us to the table mumbling sorry, he has a large party coming later and while the place might look half empty he has to think about the tables later on. Like whatever dude.

I think that a lot of these restaurants are family owned and dependent upon tourist trade not repeat business and local reputation. I also think that a lot of these families have a half retarded brother, son, son in law or brother in law who needs a job and he ends up being a miserable waiter from age 15 to 55.

Thanks for this. I went to Italy a few years back and was genuinely aghast at how shit it was. Everything from how filthy and graffitied every surface of every building is, to the horrible service and nasty, stuck-up, arrogant people, to the mediocre food.

Every time I've ever expressed this, the dago apologists come out of the woodwork to tell me that I only went to shitty tourists places or that I'm a dumb, fat American or something. They ignore clear and blatant structural flaws within the Italian culture that makes spending any amount of time there insufferable.

There are many wonderful places to see in Europe with kind people and delicious food. Italy isn't one of them.

Because they're dressed nicely but have a shitty attitude, he was using a vulgar/humorous way to say that and it isn't connected directly to the preceeding statement.

I went to italy years ago, the north though, and the food was pretty bland and I just chalked it up to that being the more industrial, working part of the country that's more like central and western europe than the southern half. The only thing I really remember was getting a plate of spaghetti and meat sauce that tasted like something an average cook could make at home and being a little disappointed, like I figured if there was one thing they'd be better at lol. I had already been to europe so the slow service and how poor, dirty, and shitty a lot of it is wasn't a shock, although the waiters and staff at places were all friendly.

There are parts of europe that are like what yoi imagine as an american, mostly the wealthier (and whiter) countries and places, but even like switzerland has areas where it's crummy little buildings and unimpressive. Somewhere like italy where you have very high taxes and dishonest government, and bad employment prospects is just naturally going to have old broken down shit, litter, and poor people. I bet it's gotten worse since I was there too.

OP's main complaint is prices. That discards most of his opinions right there. Dining on a budget requires some research, and good travel sense to get a top experience. That said, food costs more for some countries.

Rating hotel breakfast, rofl. Really now? That is the definition of touristy. It'll be catered to what they deem are the assort tourist tastes, from the scandi sliced cold cuts for open faced sandwich, to dubious quality bakery items catered to new yorkers like bagels. Local Italians are doing a standup counter of delicious coffee and pastries at whoever is the best bakery and coffee shop in town. If your Italian hotel wasn't a Boscolo, or had it's own spa on site, it won't be amazing draw for locals to dine there, unless you order off a menu and it was cooked to order. Tourists are catching bus tours, so it's gonna be fast buffets. Even then, you can ask a waiter for a capucchino from the kitchen and eggs cooked to your liking. Be ready to compliment and talk to the staff who helps you, and tip or you get bad service on day 2.

In a local restaurant in Italy, service varies based on whether the help even likes you. Fact, that's Italy. Were you wearing a blazer? Did you show personal good taste in fashion, footwear, leathers, and clean cut grooming, and practice your culturally polite etiquette and manners? Italians don't look shabby when they go out on the town for dinner. They will be wearing labels and look good. Part of why they dress well is to be treated like someone deserving respect. They speak graciously to staff from the moment they arrive. If there is an old dude sitting at a back table with a newspaper and coffee cup, dine there! Make a reservation even if you don't think you have to do that. Hire a local, too, from a food tour host to a private guide. They know what to do. Best experiences had that way. They always know someone to hook you up.

Reminds me of my mother-in-law who is so proud of her cooking and is championed by her family but all she makes is a handful of Ukrainian dishes and your average N American dishes (prime rib, spaghetti, sole etc).

I’ll never forget when I made spaghetti for them when they visited and just did my normal bologna see cooked over a long period of time. My father-in-law raved about it and said “you have to tell [his wife] how to make this” and kept remarking how amazing it was and even said it was much better than his wife’s. She was silent and brooding the whole dinner.

She’s also a huge bitch so the next time she visited I made a couple of HER specialties, cabbage rolls and borscht. It was my first time making them and I put some effort finding a good recipe and trying it out. Again she was BTFO but this time my father-in-law started off praising me but then kept quiet about it after realizing he was on thin ice.

I’ve since done this a few more times with perogies, which practically destroyed her emotionally that meal, and basically any other thing I cook. We were in an unspoken duel for a bit because my mother-in-law would sometimes show up at their visit with lots of groceries and insist on making dinner for their visits; I would acquiesce and then BTFO her for breakfast, lunch and dessert. It has gotten to the point where they insist on getting delivery or takeout food when they now visit.

It is such a nice albeit petty feeling to rub something in your cunt mother-in-law’s face like this. For 30 years she’s held her family hostage emotionally and been given the false title of World’s Greatest Cook yet she is mediocre at best, has maybe 12 recipes in her repertoire and cannot cook healthy meals to save her life and her whole family frequently has diarrhea after dinner (Not even making this up). I have to take famotidine when she cooks. She’s a know it all cunt but I knocked her off her thrown in the kitchen arena and she knows it.

French food is extremely good. Never eat at restaurants. 75% Serve pre packaged SHIT and I mean they barely fucking cook anything. The Agrofood industry DESTROYED the french restaurant and in touristic areas only a handful actually cook anything. Expensive as shit too.

The only place you're going to find good food are at country lodges or restaurants in the regions where they actually fucking cook ie; around Bordeaux and a bit farther away from big touristic centers.
There's also some legal label that are tightly enforced that require the food to be fresh, prepared from a raw form and everything to be done in house. Look for Maître Restaurateurs. The state takes this seriously and usually food is excellent and price is not too high.

Despite Americans generally being coarse, crass and cringey in their outward demeanour and manners, they definitely have a better concept of service than the Europeans overall. Americans vote with their dollar and look at momentary transactions as almost holy, not to mention they don’t have the best job security, so the end result is even the lowest serfs at least feign enthusiasm and practice good service.

In Canada you go to a box store and the staff practically hide from you or shrug if you ask where something is. I was in the US once looking for some camping equipment at a box store (Dick’s or something like that) and the person didn’t know what I was talking about. In Canada that would have been the end of the interaction but at that store they ended up having four other people try to help me. They didn’t have what I wanted in the end but I was impressed with their desire to satisfy the customer.

My experiences dining in Europe have not been positive overall in terms of service.

A waiter is supposed to be there to give you the best dining experience not to fellate your fragile ego. I'm paying them because they're the expert on their own restaurant, food, and wine list, if I order something wrong, I want to know it, I don't want a fake smile and a "yes sir" and some behind the scenes sniveling. You have to cater to your customer and guide them because, guess what, they don't fucking work here and know what's best for what they want. If the the customer wants the specific thing then you follow but if they appear hesitant or you have something similar that you feel will satisfy them more you suggest. Americans will always do as told even if its will result in a bad experience for the customer. You don't have to fucking argue and that's not what I'm saying should be done and the fact that you jumped to this tells me that you're exactly the kind of manchild that other anon talked about.

Not inherently, it's trained. 99% of people are reasonable, where the cultures differ is in how to treat the outliers. In america it's about appeasement at all costs because everyone is equally right and equally wrong at the same time. In europe the freakshow 1% karens/manchildren are not fellated, they are treated as the rude guests that they are. But even with this 1%, 99% of them would shape up if nobody put up with their shit. The problem with americans is that companies do put up with their shit because giving away a free slop of soy and corn slurry a few times a day is cheaper than fighting a frivolous lawsuit.

>y-y-you’ll always be an American and I-I-I will never want to be y-y-you

Kek who gives a fuck? As long as American greed and the foreign brain drain keeps producing innovation I couldn’t give two shits about the US. I did my MSc in the US and while it had its upsides I couldn’t wait to get the fuck out.

Your culture consists of astroturfed-artificially cultivated-corporate franchised garbage with a contrived dualistic brand loyalty to make the population feel better than those who like Pepsi or the equivalent. You guys literally think the world can be divided into Fox News vs CNN.

The US is like an experiment for creating wealth and innovation for the elites and it is all built on a base of mindless consumers who are kept ignorant and angry at their neighbours. Your entire worldview consists of red herrings.

Reminds me of the anecdote of some American market chain, can't remember who, expanding into Euroland (germany, maybe?) and wanting to keep all the American policies and worker demands. Chief among them was that the cashier was required to smile and greet each customer and ask them how they were. This is apparently a really bizarre thing in yuroland and the customers freaked out and complained and the chain had to modify itself after only a few months due to the issues it was causing with the culture clash.

My life is great and that’s all I care about. I don’t care if Canadian fast food chains are internationally popular or people like Canadian media. That doesn’t effect my life at all and I don’t derive any nationalist pride over the global consumption or recognition of Canadian products.

What matters is that my family and I are prosperous, safe and healthy. And we are. I dislike our politicians and many things about my country’s politics but that isn’t the central point in my life. I life in a beautiful place, have a great career, do not have to be concerned about crime and my country is not at the verge of some lame contrived cold civil war.

My life is great while you are obsessed with your politics and how much other countries look up to or consume American things. What are you going to brag about, high crime, decreasing longevity, ridiculous obesity rate and rate of preventable disease/death and the like?

I lived in the USA so you can’t try to sell me the American Dream bullshit. I know how you guys live and think and I would never raise my family in the USA despite having the opportunity to go there for a lucrative position. Life is more than more money and cheaper consooming.

I'm english and spent some time living in america. The service culture is really good. I mean, objectively good in a kind of meeting corporate goals way, but kind of plastic and off putting in some cases. It is like somebody is stood behind them pinching the fat on their upper arm and hissing in their ear "if you don't say HI HOW ARE YOU DOING TODAY! in a convincing tone I'll twist this bit of fucking fat HARDER I swear to god bitch" ... Like a reverse gom jabbar to ensure people weren't real humans. If I was in a great mood then everything when great, all the hi how are you today! was met with an equally enthusiastic "great! I'm wonderful thanks ... how about yourself? You seem extremely happy for 7am!" I even tolerated the constant "oh my god you are from England? Do you know Jack? He is from ... Londonshire I think!". When I was in a more normal mood or a bad mood it was a rank and artificial experience that got on my fucking tits. I started answering with the most ridiculous answers. "I'm terrible, my dog just died ... Yes I am here on business, I'm a paedophile thanks for asking, yes I think it means something different here, in Scotlandham we have to have medical training for it".

Also overall it was a lot like hanging out with over enthusiastic children. Nobody had a subtle sense of humour, nobody got irony, everything was taken at face value. I enjoyed it to be fair because it was like talking to GTA npcs.

>How you doing?
>WONDERFUL! My cat just died ...

I went to Italy a few years ago and the grocery stores were so shitty. First of all you had to look really hard to find bottled water that wasn't carbonated. They really love their fizzy water. First night there I got a pork chop and broccoli because everything else was so expensive. A small piece of mystery beef was like 20 Euro - wtf? So the next day I went to a store in a completely different place and was going to haul back my groceries, but same thing. Then the next 3 cities I went to had the same thing. I ate pork chops with broccoli every night because even fish or chicken was outrageously expensive. Now it makes sense why Europoors love loading up on carbs, they can't afford meat.

Yeah that's pretty much how it is. But my experiences outside of the US have generally shown me that I'd rather have helpful, friendly employees than wasting a bunch of time trying to sort things out at a business for myself, because the employees stand around picking their own asses. Why are they even being paid to be there if I have to do it all?
Sure, people don't react to sarcasm, but I take that as a result of most people being of average intelligence. The employees are in a store for hours every day, with most interactions being superficial, and then one of every hundred someone makes a witty or subtle comment. Would you be sure you heard the customer right? Is it worth responding if you misinterpreted their comment as sarcasm when they were being truthful, potentially triggering a shitstorm? I don't blame them if comments sail past them. I'd be impressed though, if this situation is different in the UK (I've never been).

Spanish food varies extremely throughout the regions. Coincidentially, i am myself from Alicante, but from the southmost region where food is a bit different since it relies more on vegetables, and I have not really had much contact with Alicante itself.

Rice is tricky, and it's very easy to get bad paella in restaurants, but maybe you just didn't enjoy it as much. It's a really humble dish in the end. In any case, if typical shared dishes of seafood and other stuff didn't seduce you, you might want to try Andalucia or the northern regions.

I think food in my hometown is pretty alright. We're really into semicured fish and fresh artichokes. And lots of hearty vegetable stews.

I think this is the case with many foreigners. Drinking in bars is very cheap and we're very laid back about it.

I think the difference is that drinking a beer every day is kind of okay but getting officially shitfaced is generally frowned upon unless you're 20 somethings and you're partying.

I think getting black out drunk during the weekends is more the norm in the north of europe.

My mother in law asked my girlfriend how come she didn't become an alcoholic in Spain, to my appallment, since they were drinking wine, beer and vodka with little rest all through the week we were there (I guess since they were celebrating we were there with them).

Yeah basically just dont drink so much. I'd say we drink often in Spain, just not as much as I've seen foreigners do when they visit. Just fucking slow down and have a caña instead of a whole fucking pint.

No, you don't quite get it.
ALL servers hate their lives. The difference is in America we train them to act and fire ones who can't.

In America, being a bartender or a waiter in a nice place can mean 500 bucks a night or even more.
It's not a bad gig if you are paid well
