Tried making spinach puffs and this is how it turned out after 4 minutes at 350F. Is my oven shit at cooking food, or am I?

wtf is that?
parchment paper? even if ur oven was running at 600F it shouldnt look like that. either your oven wasnt clean and caught on fire or you used some fucked up paper to roast your spinach. next time i'd suggest flash frying your spinach and not roasting it. however idk wtf is going on here. 350F at 4 minutes shouldnt look like that and theres no way your oven is going above 600F. you did something wrong here, either too much fat or the wrong materials. idk what happened but its not right.

It was Hostess brand parchment paper. I'll admit I've never used that brand before (just grabbed it from the dollar store, I usually use the walmart pleb brand and figured they couldnt be much different).
Spinach was already pan fried. Only reason it was in the oven was to bake the puff pastries.

I am at a complete loss for how my apartments shit tier oven even got that hot in the first place. I'd think it was just the parchment paper, but the pastries are burnt to a crisp too, so I don't think its just the parchment.

I just moved into this apartment a week or so ago, this is the first time I'm using the oven. I guess the top looks kinda dingy, but I chalked that up to it just probably being really old. I'm about to submit a Maintenance request about it, but I kinda doubt anything will actually get fixed. They checked out the stove a few days ago and replaced a few plates, but insisted that since the oven heated up it was in good working order.

I like your spoon spoon. Do you have a meat thermometer you could put in the oven to see how hot it gets when you set it to 350? Opening that oven must have been wild, do you still have eyebrows?

Positive. Mostly since I saw that it had both a bake and broil option and was pretty stoked since I didn't really think an old stove like this would even have both options. Definitely set it to bake after seeing that, though,

I am at a complete loss as to how this could have happened. I'd chalk it up to being a casual cook with a new oven messing up, but I feel like no matter how horrible a cook you are, this shouldnt be happening within 4 minutes of being put in.

>4 minutes
You are lying to hide your fuck up. Even at maximum temperature a home oven is not going to make it that burnt after just 4 fucking minutes. So why are you lying to strangers about this? Who the hell knows. Some kind of weird mental illness perhaps. Nobody even knew about your fuck up until you came on here and told us about it, and then proceeded to lie to try and cover it up. I think you need help, but not just for cooking. You are a strange dude.

I have one, but it doesn't go up past 200F.

>Opening that oven must have been wild, do you still have eyebrows?
It was just smoky is all. The real pain was the embarrassment of my moving-in neighbor seeing me fanning the smoke detector through the open front door.

>> No.16548086

I really wish I was lying. The only reason I know for sure it was about 2 minutes was because I saw the timer when I was pausing the music on my phone to attend to a smoking oven. I just wanted to post and see if anyone knew why my oven did this/if there was a way to fix it.

If you're actually telling the truth that it was in there for 4 minutes, it's probably because you did something retarded like turning the heating element to maximum and then putting the food on the very top shelf.

Impossible to say for sure what you did wrong but I'd be curious to know, because my girlfriend tends to burn food in the oven as well and I have no idea what it is she's doing wrong. She always blames her oven like you blame yours, but when I use her oven it's fine

There was only one shelf and it was set to 350F, but the maximum is 500.

Normally I'd completely chalk it up to me fucking up and own it, especially since I knew I was bound to burna few things with a new oven- but I genuinely have no idea how I could have managed to mess this up so bad.

>There was only one shelf
I can see in your photo that there are literally 3 shelves inside the oven. Also it's clearly not a fan oven so the temperature distribution is going to be less even in general. If you set the oven to only heat from the top and put the food on the top shelf, it could easily be way hotter than whatever temperature you set it to.

Also clean your oven, that shit is nasty

Damn, you're absolutely right. I didn't even notice there were areas to move the rack.
Would I be better off moving it to the middle? I feel like the top would be insanely close to the top burner. It was on the bottom one where it is now when I tried using it, but maybe it was too close to the bottom burner that time?

Forgive the autism, I've been cooking in the same oven my whole life so this is pretty new grounds..

That thermocouple probe is fucked. Double check with an over thermometer. You may be able to sand the carbon shit off the probe. This type of probe has a stainless steel sheath, so it'll be ok. Otherwise you just need a new probe. Tell this to your maintenance guy. I repair furnaces and kilns.

>> No.16550453

>>16550273
Thanks, I’ll tell this to him. Hopefully it’ll just be a simple matter of switching the probe. My apartments policy says they replace appliances for free as they break but part of me still really likes this little old oven and it’d be cool to find a way to keep it working.
But a cool looking oven doesn't matter quite as much as not setting off the smoke alarm every time I cook.
