decided to go with The 6 Isles since they were out of Teachers. Neck pour was sort of to be expected tier, youthful peaty smoke, 43% and still a virturally neutral mouth feel. Second pour and a few hours later it opened up nicely with some aromatic wood spices and heather, a little vegetal/savory pepper note on the back end.

Its much lighter in the glass than the bottle. Compared 2nd pour to Machir Bay and there the differences really popped out. Machir Bay is much more sweet and spirity and 6 Isles seems more mature/mellowed. Gonna try to blend it with some Glengoyne 10.

I feel like when I first saw this on the shelf 6 months ago it was under $40, but I paid $48.99 USD yesterday. Not a bad price for the taste as my Ardbeg 10 was $10 more after tax and is less complex. Not sure what the "Special Edition" is for, bottled September 2017.

so compared to the basic Longrow Heavily Peated, is it more or less peated and does Longrow have comparable complexity or is it just another young peated smoke bomb? So far a lack of complexity has been my biggest peeve with popular peated single malts being 80+% pure smoke and very little anything else. Its a neat trick but gets boring imho.

I've been looking for another Campbeltown and Longrow keeps popping up, but its $90 after tax at my closest shop, but a further drive means I can get it for under $70 where as last time I saw Springbank 10 earlier in the year it was the same price.

I'm having a hard time pulling the trigger on Longrow because I have enough young peated whiskys and I'd be kinda pissed if its not got more than like a 10% variation on something like Ardbeg 10 or something.

there's no "getting a bad deal", the provincial liquor store always has the lowest prices and sales are regulated so private stores literally cannot lower the price more than allowed (I think it's percentage of price), I guess I just won't get it again, it was good but yes not 65 good, the only "good" prices we get are on locally produced alcohol, so mostly rye, and small distilleries that make single malts are usually $70 minimum

That's an excuse for high taxes, but not for abandoning market forces.

Our governments argument is much the same. A 10% increase in cost of alcohol reduces the consumption of alcohol by 5% which decreases consumption related harms a mystery percentage (disproportionately more for the young since they're poor).

I'd guess at least twice as old as Machir Bay. havent compared to Ardbeg 10 or Peat Monster, but I have a suspicion that its gonna be closest to Benriach 10 Curiositas. not that there seems to be a lot of sherry notes, but there is something reminds me a lot of the sweet heathery side with a slight sulpur hint like the Peated Highland, big difference off the top of my head is the lack of the springy malt notes.

Im really taking to it a lot, but its also been a couple months since my last purchase.

It's fairly similar. But for the most part you can deduce the ingredients. I suspect the blend is mostly Ledaig, and would definitely call that the most similar whisky. Not that I recommend Ledaig, I think think it's way too sharp and that is compensated for in the blend.
I agree with your age estimations. Machir Bay is 3 iirc, and I'd place 6 Isles at 6.

I had forgot to add the Kilchoman isnt from the last pickup, it was mostly for a color comparison, but the bottle makes it look darker. Im sure you know the 6 Isles is half a shade off water.

Once you get past that the quality of your collection will decrease over time because it's the shit ones that you don't drink that stick around.

for me it borders being too expensive to drink daily to affordable to drink once or twice a month. some are even sentimental which makes them more valuable to me and I have them much less often. the ones I dont drink too often, I want to keep those special. having them more often would kinda ruin them imho.

which is where the cost and enjoyment median really comes into view. having something cheap enough that you dont care how much you pour and something good enough it warrants more time with the glass. to me becoming overly familiar is as bad as something disappointing, getting bored with it quickly and making you want something different. in colder months I'll pour frok three seperate bottles, sometimes differences are bigger than others(region, style, age, etc.) and compare them over the course of a few hours and then end on something special.

I like to shit on buffalo trace because of the scarcity but their lower end products have great profiles for new bourbon drinkers and then they have all these different expensive offerings to string people along as they go deeper.
