I can see the first one, but the second would require the person or group to source materials and equipment necessary for production (you can probably bootleg the carbonation desu).

This is true. It's pretty impressive how flaky and generally inept they are. To be honest, it actually inspired me to do less work since they're able to keep their jobs (the one's that don't just stop showing up one day or get fired for threatening someone, I mean) with their given output. I make beverages for a living. I don't mean like, barista or bartender ... I mean like managing a drinks factory. Cola isn't hard to make. The whole flavour thing is more marketing than anything. Here is how we do it ...

Test pH of typical drinks in the required spec.
Calculate sugar content and range.
Identify key flavours/aroma.
Mix up a batch, pass it around the team, get feedback, make adjustments.
Say fuck it and make a full size batch, tweak it for the next based on feedback and having to live with 25k gallons for the next 5 weeks of production cycle.

We have to make a lot of core products to maintain stock and fulfil regular orders. A slot for a new product assuming we don't drop it to accommodate unexpected extra demand on one of our existing lines comes up every 5 weeks max. It might take a year or so to evolve a new recipe through gradual revisions. After a year or two you get pretty damn close.

I don't get why people think the recipe for coke is some sorta well kept secret.
Not only are there licensed coke manufacturers all over the world but there's also no single universal way to make it. Almost every country has slight tweaks to their coke, though it's mostly the kind of sugar used as based on local availability.
