some seem to be less impressed with some of the older aged bottles (15/18), but the 10 Cask Strength Batch 1-5's are pretty unanimously renowned as eloquent "sherry bombs". I was pleasantly surprised, as I was able to taste the different barrels pretty easily and the complexity takes you on a little ride every sip. pairs/mixes well with Ardbeg 10 as it is on the sweet side(slightly savory). I have the Batch 2 and its perfectly sippable(like a maltier/heavier Irish) at its abv although a few drops of water dont hurt if you are looking for more.

I picked up a bottle of Smokehead Supercharged because it was on heavy discount.
It's fucking amazing, and I immediately went out and bought another.
Hopefully the tacky arse bottle keeps the snobs away so that my gloriously under-priced cask strength single malt islay can stay cheap forever.

I haven't been able to guess the distillery though. I don't think it tastes like Ardbeg or Caol Ila, as most people assume.

as far as places that will ship it there are 4 on wine searcher. Total Wine typically has the standard Smokehead on the shelf and their site shows High Voltage as available in Indianapolis.

as far as if its Coal Ila or not, have you had young cask strength Coal Ila before? reading up on the tasting notes (honey, smoke, pepper and floral) to me says Coal Ila. Its possible they threw it in a Laphroaig barrel to make it less obvious and the fact they have to heavily color it would suggest its naturally light in color(especially at the 6-10 years its aged) so from that you can assume Ardbeg, Coal Ila or Laphroaig. I'd rule out Ardbeg because they like the blended stuff they are in to say it and Cask Strength Laphroaig would almost surely be more expensive even with the youth. Coal Ila makes so much they got it coming out their ears and are known to be in at least a hand full of other Independent Bottlings like Port Askaig, so its pretty cheap and you no doubt are paying more that packaging.

depends on what you mean by stronger. Wee Beastie is less refined in almost every way compared to Octomore, but WB also has 4-5x less PPM and Octomore is a bit older to boot. So the strength of the two differs by a bit (Ardbegs Youth and lower abv/ppm - Bruicladdichs higher abv and ppm)

Shilling smoke wagon. It's sourced so I thought it would be a meme, but for the thirty dollar bottle category it's really good. No, I've only had the official Caol Ila 12 (and Johnny Walkers). I found it to be quite boring. If it is Caol Ila then they're definitely doing it more justice than the distiller itself.

A Laphroaig barrel is not out of the question. I've known them to do wonders before, but usually to unpeated whisky.

>have to heavily color it
It's dark as fuck. Does e150 get that brown? Regardless they're all pale, so it doesn't really narrow anything down.

My tasting notes for the smokehead are more along the lines of Cream, hint of lemon (which I find to be the most commonly false tasting note) and malt, with a background of smoke. So for the most part it tastes like really nice cream biscuits. I'm not getting honey / pepper / floral notes.

The only ones I'd rule out are Bowmore / Bruchladdich because it's too smoky. Or Kilchoman / that new one that's not 3 years old yet because they're too young.

The cheapest CS Caol Ila I found is North Star $180AUD, so literally double the price of this. Uigeadail is like $150. Lagavulin 12 CS $200. Laphroaig I can't get. Nothing's close.

I have to agree, although I think the regular makers mark stands out as a bottom shelf 80 proofer as it has it's unique makers profile (which isn't good) where most 80 proof offerings usually only provide the most stereotypical bourbon notes buried in water. When actual bourbon folks try to push makers to me it always comes off as shilling as there's no complexity and it consistently carries plastic funk. there is a radical difference between styles, to the point where they would seem incomparable
Pedro Ximinez: some of the sweetest dessert wine out there, syrup, raisin, liqueury
Fino: some of the driest table wine out there, aged under a layer of flor which gives it a rounded yeastiness like bread dough, but very dry and citrusy otherwise. This is classic for pairing with salted meats, strong cheese, olives, and general charcuterie
Amontillado: sherry that is allowed to oxidize over time, making it nutty and autumnal and reducing the acid levels. Pairs with almost every dish under the sun. This is what you should use for any dish besides bisque, which should use a cream sherry
Cream sherry: dry sherry blended with pedro ximinez to make it desserty but not overwhelmingly so. Tend to be the cheapest.
palo cortado: a fino sherry that then undergoes oxidation, giving it both a yeasty and bright quality as well as a nutty and spicy character, depending on how long oxidation is allowed to occur
then there are single harvest/single barrel sherries which can taste like almost anything depending on how long they age and under what conditions

almost all sherry casks used for scotch are not used for producing sherry that people drink--they usually just dump Palomino wine into them for a few months, dump the wine, and then ship the casks off to scotland

Favorite rye for the price. $40-50 at the store and is super flavorful and drinkable. They also make a damn good bourbon that almost tastes like candy corn despite being fully proofed. Some might like that more than the rye.

>NAS bottling better than their old youngest
Old cheapest. Lahproaig Lore, Ardbeg Uigeadail, Aberlour A'bunadh, Highland Park Valknut, etc, etc are all better than their entry level bottlings.

My favorite cheaper NAS is Benriach Birnie Moss, which was better than the Benriach Curisotas 10. Unfortunately it looks like it's being replaced with Smoky 10 and Smoky 12. Though apparently they're not bad.

Loch Lomond is decent, aerostone is also tasty. Glenlivet is pretty good too. Wild Turkey 101 and Woodford you can get on special for around that, both really tasty bourbons. Although a complete meme, Proper Twelve is a decent Irish around that price too. Normally I just go to the liquor store and grab whatever's on special. Stuff that's normally 60-65 frequently gets specialed down to 50 and that's when I try it to figure out what I like
