the real answer is because there are vast numbers of vastly overpaid marketing executives who have to constantly justify their existence by changing things

imagine all the manhours and billable hours that go into something like a logo change, a new slogan, a different color on the disposable cup, etc. there's no way they make a return on that investment but somehow massive companies with billions of dollars still pay people to spend time to come up with shit like that.

Fast food restaurants have always been soulless.

They always were about increasing profit, not quality, values or a good time.

30 years ago they couldn't build bunker restaurants because we didn't allow them - even though we knew the staff, customers and food were already soulless.

Today the architecture reflects the lack of content of those places.

For me, it's the mid century brick restaurants.

It wasn't just McDonald's locations, all sorts of office parks, strip malls, shopping center, commercial spaces used to be made out of this kind of brick. It's a very specific aesthetic and these buildings are getting rarer and rarer as they are being torn down every year.

Whenever I drive by a building like this, I look at it and it makes me feel nostalgic because these types of buildings used to be everywhere as a kid. They are the perfect ix of slightly dingy looking but still inviting, idk why I love it so much.

Pic related sort of captures it, but not totally, the brick should be a little darker. If anybody has a picture of what i am talking about, please post it.

If you want to get down to it, blame the decades of pop culture and media that lampooned the childish clown-themed fast food restaurants of the past. That's what really forced companies to drop the "soul" aspect and try to rebrand themselves as a more "mature" urban cafe-style restaurant.

This thread and all the posters in it are fucking stupid.

It's a design change that is intended to help them posture themselves as fast casual restaurants . The idea is that nobody wants to hang out in the old school mcdonalds with the goofy roof, playplace, and cartoonish aesthetic. Same thing with Taco Bell, KFC, etc. They don't want to be visually distinct as "fast food" places that are seen as cheap and crappy. They want to look like they're somewhat high quality establishments where you can feel respectable about spending time inside it.

I mean, it wasn't always that way. Fast food restaurants were originally just a step below diners and casual restaurants. It was the years of childish pandering and goofy atmosphere that lead to people starting to associate them with absolute trash.
But yeah, you really can't go back once you've sunk that low.

One of the current motifs of this architecture revolves around the logo and the name being the only prominent thing you want your customers to notice. In order to know what building it is, you have to look for the logo and name specifically. It gets you more familiar with the logo and the name. In the world of the Internet and App orders, what can fit into a phone icon is all they want you to know them as.

A bell. Clean, straight lines, visibility. Clean. Sterile. Safe. Distant. Exactly how it looks on your phone, in-person.

You will, with a single tap, consume the pod-delivered fast food.

The way we're marketed fast food has changed considerably since the mid-2000's. Fast food is no longer a place where kids go, and parents can also eat. The marketing has shifted to focus on busy, working adults, and as a result, the style guides for the brand changes, and with those changes in the brand come the changes in style of location.

>that's very cynical
Maybe 20+ years ago, but (in the US at least) most preexisting communities already have a saturated fast food market, where everyone who regularly eats fast food has a variety of choices which compete for a pool of customers. This leads to some chains being unable to draw in enough people for reasons that can be both the chain's fault, but also just a condition of the overall tastes of the customers when they have the choice.
Almost every long-term chain, including McDonalds, has experienced the pain of a period of decline, and it would be foolish to ignore it.
>and soulless
True, but aesthetic soul usually only translates into a dollar value if it is rare, hard to reproduce, etc. The McDonalds buildings could be readily remade if people found it worthwhile, while most people looking for buildings want a clean slate.

Dudes. I saw a McDonalds burger 20 years after it was made

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hyGumsxN9c

Doesn't it concern you it looks that good after 20 years? Watch SuperSizeMe. Watch shit on factory farming. Buy some wet dog food and compare the meat quality to that of your local fast food joint. They just found microplastics in fetuses for the first time. LIterally try to go as natural or farm raised from a local farmer as possible. There is a rise in parkinsons, autism, and dementia in record numbers and I 100% believe its due to the fact that they're poisoning the food supply. You do realize most grocery store and fast food suppliers are like 4 companies right? They're all in the FDA's pocket and don't abide by regulations. They make the fucking regulations. That burger you got from Burger King probably was from a cow with a gnarly puss bubble on his arm. Look at pic related? Which one would you rather eat? The one that is filled with steroids and ate literal shit it's whole life or a grass fed cow? I'm not tree hugger vegan retard I'm just saying you are what you eat. If you want to be a gigachad BASED alpha male like me. You need to stop putting nasty fast food MSG plastic preservative ridden shit into your body and exercise a little bit of discipline and initiative for once in your life.

Nah man, this is what you don't get. We're seeing capitalism on a scale never encountered before. The Oligarchy/Oligopoly owns everything. In 20 years there will be like 39 Companies left. All in bed with the government btw. Its going to have the same effect as communism/socialism on accident. Like >>16471168
said, every town is going to look the same dreary similar cheap unappealing architecture. You don't have freedom in this country. You have the illusion of it. You can eat anywhere you want as long as its 1/6 fast food joints. Every town looks the same. Like Commie Russia. Its depressing.

Every site has this at some level unless you have someone going out of their way to prune unoriginal content - which is usually unappreciated because what's boringly repetitive to one person is either fresh or appealingly repetitive to many others. This is even more true of larger and IRL communities.
While 4chan is repetitive, I can only think of a handful of discussion sites - with much, much less traffic than 4chan - where people go out of their way to make original discussion without reservation. This is to say nothing of OC art or the exact quality of it - original doesn't mean high quality.

The reason these threads are repeatedly made isn't just because someone is looking for the practical answer to a question, but because they are implicitly looking for validation that:
>This situation is a problem
>This is a problem others care about
And if they're not just venting:
>This is a problem with a solution
>This is a solution that (You) have agency in
Giving an answer like >>16471168 is both generally correct while failing to address any of the above, since it implies that even the (collective) owners of McDonalds care so little about the aesthetics of their buildings that they'll trade it off for convenience. Since the people with the most significant agency in this situation don't consider the change a negative problem but a positive solution, it leads to a dissonance between people who grew up with it and have profound nostalgia for it, and the forces and systems in society which caused this change to occur regardless. This inevitably leads to the "they took this from you" tone.

It was straight up full of lies. Spurlock is known to be full of goat shit. Many, many people attempted the same diet he did to try and replicate it, and not a single one suffered the negative health effects he did (IIRC the worst side effect was a slightly elevated blood pressure with like 4 lbs of weight gain). It was also revealed that he was going through rampant alcoholism during filming, so it actually turns out he was poisoning his body, just not with McDick's. You've been duped anon. People don't realize that a lot of strip malls make it so that standalone buildings that are built adjacent to the mall have to follow the same general architecture as the strip mall. A Chipotle and a Starbucks near me are both built to match the nearby strip mall, for example. I've also seen a Taco Bell and a Pizza Hut straight up open locations inside a strip mall, which obviously means that they're just generic rectangular spaces spruced up however they can.
