Here you go boys
Henry McKenna 10 Year Single Barrel BiB
Price: $44.99 USD
Specs: 50% abv, 78% corn, 12% malted barley, 10% Rye, KSBW
Barrel 10495, Barreled 4/19/2011
Color: Browned butter
Nose: Sweet spices lead, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, into buttery pastry, dried oranges, and honey. Rye pepper just barely present on the very end. Yep, it’s bourbon.
Palate: Soft and sweet at first, almost cakey, big kick of rye pepper right in the middle, followed again by orange peel and honey. Very consistent, little-to-no presence of youthful burn, but surprisingly spicy considering the mashbill. A drop of water amps up the honey and pastry into fried doughnuts and maple syrup, but the spice doesn’t go anywhere
Conclusion: This is a very well-made bourbon—it leans sweet and fresh rather than woody or fruity, which is not usually my style, but has proper balance and length, and never feels cloying or syrupy. Would be curious to try this at a younger and older age. If you’ve ever had butterfly cake, this is it but in liquid form. I member when this was 30 bucks *siiiiiip* yep those were the days.

Larceny Barrel Proof
Price: $49.99 USD
Specs: 60.5% abv, 68% corn, 20% wheat, 12% malted barley, KSBW
Batch B521 (second release of the year, bottled May, 2021), NAS, but 6 to 8 years old average
Color: Deep amber
Nose: Deep and boozy sinus-opener at barrel proof, but a fresh and fruity quality lurking underneath, bananas foster and cooked red apple, lots of vanilla. No spice to speak of, except maybe whatever was left over from the McKenna. Explosively sweet smelling.
Palate: Surprisingly delicate: bubblegum and cooked apple again, more powdered sugar than caramel—bracing and unapologetically saccharine. Bananas foster carries it to the ending, upon which everything just floats off the tongue. Water seemed to enhance the alcohol, which ironically brought some of that sugar into balance, and underscored the fruit just a touch more.
Conclusion: About what I expected from a wheated bourbon at cask strength, lots of cooked fruit and sugar, lacking in the depth department. In the age of Buffalo Trace hype, this is a great value for arguably a better product than some of their cask strength offerings, but if you desire a bourbon drinker’s bourbon, you might curiously find this too light even at cask strength. Still, though, no faults, and it will get consumed.

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof
Price: $69.99 USD
Specs: 59.1% abv, 78% corn, 12% malted barley, 10% rye
B521 (Second release bottled May, 2021)
Color: Sherried scotch
Nose: Caramel and cinnamon really punch out, with some wood glue/toast underneath. Vanilla ice cream and fresh waffle cone buried a little bit further in there. Strangely softer than Larceny BP
Palate: Caramel leads here and seems to influence everything else—a bit of rye spice, a bit of vanilla, a bit of oak, but it’s all through the lens of caramel. Easy drinker for the proof, but also a bit simplistic considering the pricetag. On the low side of alcohol for previous ECBP releases, some going in excess of 70% abv. Water reins in the caramel and lets the other notes sit on their own, and also exposes more of the wood char.
Conclusion: Same mashbill as the McKenna, just younger, uncut, and a blend of barrels rather than a single one. Rounder than Larceny but underperforms McKenna’s nuance. This is a good whiskey, but considering it’s priced the same as every other premium release barring the unobtainables, it seems to lack clarity and nuance. I’ll probably play with this in some cocktails.

Pikesville 6 Yr Rye
Price: $49.99 USD
Specs: 55% abv, 51% rye, 39% corn, 10% malted barley, SRW
Color: Deep gold
Nose: Black pepper, toffee, vanilla, and oak. Rye is forthcoming but has clearly been tempered to appeal more to bourbon drinkers. Dark chocolate/cocoa and cola nut. A hint of dill on the end, but not a lot of savory qualities overall. Pleasant nose but stark divide between bourbon and rye notes.
Palate: Orange liqueur and toffee, dill and pepper towards the middle, caramel and vanilla moving to the finish. There’s a lot to like here, and the sweetness is understated compared to its other heaven hill compatriots. Chocolate re-emerges after multiple sips and is enhanced by a drop of water.
Conclusion: Lots of complexity here, each sip offering up some different notes as the palate acclimates. Some of the notes feel discordant at times, but the whole package comes together nicely with some air and some time. Niggling complaints aside, this is a great rye and definitely worth the money.

>Nose: Spiced red apples, sandalwood, clove, charred orange peel
>Palate: Fall potpourri, toasted almonds covered in dark chocolate, freshly-finished wood, leading into an intense mezcal-esque smokiness that lingers for minutes. As it fades, a bit more of the sherry comes back. Sweet spices reminiscent of the nose gradually reveal themselves after leaving it to air out.
>Conclusion: This is a potent, spicy, wood-driven dram, though surprisingly light on oaky tannins. Most of the fruit is gone, but what little remains does serve as an important counter-balance. Reminds me of late fall and/or a high-end furniture outlet. Not for the faint of heart.

It's a fantastic value if you like the style, considering you can get it for around 150 dollars, but it is very very woody. I think the 17 will be my go-to going forward just because the fruit's not as faded.
