at some places they are amazing - freshest salad, fresh fresh FRESH tomatoes, just FRESSSSHHH pickles and FREEEEEAAAAAASHHHHHHH ONIONS.
the meat - HOT and GRILLED

at some stores? salad isnt fresh. tomatoes are squashed, not fresh. pickles? actually, the pickles usually are still fine. onions? not really fresh.
meat? soft and kind of not good.

a good whopper is amazing - a bad whopper is literal trash.

I dunno if this is for everyone but on my phone app I've had unlimited $3 double whopper coupons for a year now and I get those when I'm feeling like I need trash so twice a month or so. Full price nah, I refuse to pay full price on any fast food anywhere it's just insane how much it is these days. It's a decent compromise for me to keep me somewhat away from an early grave if I can only have fast food with good coupons.

I actually got a whopper last week because I had the exact same question. Here's my take:
If you're looking for a fast food burger, the Whopper is relatively uncompelling compared to other chain offerings. Simple as.

See, the Whopper is not trash, it's not even bad for what it is: a variant of a relatively cheap fast food burger. It's mediocre at worst.
The problem is that it emulates an intentionally cheap, mediocre homemade burger too faithfully. Now I'm not saying it's actually very faithful - the grill flavoring is definitely questionable - but out of all the fast food burgers out there in that price range it is the closest. Which would be great if that's what most people desired. Some people do, but when given the choice, most people seem to gravitate towards the less traditional but uniquely tasteful burger, like (primarily) McDonalds, or White Castle, Whataburger, In-N-Out, Jack in the Box, etc. , or they will pay more for a chain which tries to compete with what you could make at home, either with ingredients or actual quality preparation.

It's kind of like RC Cola:
Does RC Cola fail to be a cola? No.
Does it taste like shit? No, it's a mediocre cola. Some people actually like it. If it was resoundingly shit not even price could save it.
Is there any reason to choose it over Coke or Pepsi if you're getting a cola? Only if you're looking for that taste, and most people aren't. So usually no.
