Are these things any good or do you have to spend 500-1000 to get something that actually works and doesn’t break within two months?

I got one for about £130. Not from Amazon though.

The quality is good and I like being able to have nitro coffee on tap. The coffee comes out great. Its just a case of pouring in your cold brew and screwing in a few gas canisters. The difficulty is finding the correct amount of N2O to add for the amount of liquid you have in the barrel. Just a bit of trial and error.

They are also difficult to chill if you dont have a big fridge. I put mine in a cool box with ice water and just top up with ice each morning.

geisha is phenomenal, but only really worth it if you've developed a palette for coffee. find a café that knows what they're doing. you want single origin beans (one type of bean, instead of a blend of multiple types). I'd recommend a washed-process coffee from Africa, Ethiopian or Kenyan or something. These have really clean, pleasant flavours that are generally agreeable. You'll know if the café is decent if the barista can tell you about the origin and processing of the beans. Oh and probably get a long black, bold and flavourful but not as intense as just an espresso shot

>> No.16389717

>>16388701
I've had it 18 months and used it fairly consistently in the summer months since then.

I normally make around 2-3L of cold brew for a 5L barrel. That requires 2 or 3 8g nitro cannisters to pressurise and get a nice drink. I buy them from ebay/amazon, normally for about £7.50 for 10.

I typically use cheaper beans for cold brew. So the price of the beans plus gas is still cheaper than espresso with fresh speciality beans.

Don’t listen to this faggot. French Press is an immersion method that extracts a lot of flavor from the coffee. V60 is a meme device that gives you a “tea-like” experience that “highlights the brightness” of the coffee. Basically what this means is you’re gonna be disappointed.

If you can handle a thicker, tastier cup of coffee, to French press. If you’re a little bitch that can’t handle a few particles of coffee at the bottom of your cup, go V60 and enjoy your bitter cup of nothing with notes of orange peel and burnt toast.

It is possible, but probably not with these mini kegs.

Typically for home use to have something on a nitro cannister, you would use a Corny keg. They come in standard size of 19L but also available in 10L. They have gas and liquid connectors. You would need a corny keg, a high pressure regulator and a stout tap as well as all the connectors and tubing. You can get most of this as a set from homebrew websites.

It will cost you quite a bit more to do it that way I think.

yeah they're not bad. I think it's bean-dependent. if your beans are too acidic, then without the backend of the shot to balance it with a little bitterness, the sourness could be overwhelming. Absolutely. I believe one of the problems with ristrettos, is that they have no real defined recipe. For a regular double espresso, you can safely toss out something like 35g and not raise too many eyebrows.
I've never come across any sort of recipe for a ristretto.

When I was initially trained in, they showed my what was described as "The three stages of espresso", them being sour, sweet, and bitter. Each stage lasting seven seconds and being timed from when the first coffee leaves the portafilters, not from when you turn the pump on. Obviously pre infusion will fuck with this, but you get the idea.
The guys showed me that a ristretto should be timed for 15 seconds, to extract all of the sourness, sweetness, and only a touch of bitterness. I find that final second of bitterness really does help the shot.
Right now, I'm playing around with a washed chelbesan from Ethiopia on espresso which normally tastes like orange, pear, and bergamot. But as a ristretto, gives you a really juicy cranberry.
I'd suggest you try a 15 second run time, and like I said earlier, don't time it from when the pump turns on, but from when it starts to leave the portafilters.

Yes you can leave it for an extended period of time. You may lose some pressurisation. Mine is normally fine over the course of a week. However, the quality of your coffee will probably deteriorate during that time.

I don't really see any "barista libraries" that will let met check one out for a few weeks. I'm not going to camp out in line for weeks like the iphone retards who will crack the screen a week later, so throwing $3500 at a pretty bulletproof top tier product I could likely sell for 3300+ if I don't like it seems fair. Had a relatively cheap grinder from Costco and it has been nothing but trouble for me over the time I've had it. I recently got into Bones Coffee. I like their blends a lot, but their beans are too oily for this grinder to handle and the thing starts heating up like it's going to explode. I need a new grinder and would like some recommendations. I am the only coffee drinker in the household. I brew with a Hario V60 and use their 7 cup carafe so I never need to make more coffee than that at any one time. I want one that lets me easily pick the grind size for it to get the beans at (I really don't like the grinders where you have to somewhat eyeball it and stop when you're satisfied) and I want it to provide a nice uniform grind. I would prefer something below $100 if possible. Needs to be electric of course. It doesn't have to be on Amazon though I do have Prime so that is an added convenience not to mention their customer service is hassle-free.

And as an aside, what do you folks think about Bones Coffee? Does anyone know how they are able to make their beans? They seem to have some sort of potent addition to them to give it the flavor, but they claim they don't use any allergens or artificial sweeteners.

Are they better at dealing with oily beans? I used to have a JavaPresse hand grinder and I honestly hated it. It took forever to grind through the beans (I brew with two scoops *from the aeropress scooper* worth of coffee beans) and it broke down on me and wouldn't work again even after I took it apart to try to fix it. I don't mind getting one, but I would need it to be able to actually grind beans at a good rate and be decent quality. I also hated how the only way to adjust size of grinds on it was via turning a dial that had absolutely no markings on it to help tell you what size you would be working with. Instead they suggested it based off of turns, as in turn it 3 times for X sized grind.

Report back. Even bumping up a half gram will drastically change the puck density. I was at like 2.2 @ 17g on a kinu and the old signature basket. Pulling between 25 and 35 second shots. Shoot for under 2 bars until you get the puck hydrated and dripping, then lean into it. 9 bars is just a reference point, you can pull fantastic shots at much lower pressure, provided you're aware of your other variables.

Can you comment on pre-infusion (on a Flair Signature)? Whats your standard technique once you have added the water?

Im not sure if I should wait some time before applying any pressure, start applying gentle pressure straight away, start applying full pressure straight away etc.

Preinfusing was basically necessary on the taller, skinnier baskets(compared to wider standard 58mm baskets). You're gently letting the water hydrate the puck. ANY pressure over 0 bars will make this happen. Water in, plunger in, pull gently until the first drips hit your cup, then ramp it up. You don't need to pull from .5bar to 9, you can gradually ramp up the pressure. The entire point of a manual lever is this variability, so just experiment. If your grinder is new, don't get stuck with the idea
>this number pulled good shots before, I can't understand why its not working now
Those burrs are gradually breaking in, the freshly milled cutting edges are slowly rolling over. I'm actually pretty sure I was at ~1.9 when my m47p new out of the box, but over a few weeks I settled into the 2.2ish range.

anything wrong with using those metal filters for pour over?

Ive been using instant coffee from trader joes but Im kinda sick of it, it just doesnt taste good.

Im thinking an electric kettle + that is the cheapest way to get decent light roast coffee. Probably start with ground coffee, then get a grinder later if I actually use it a lot.

Also, Im in boston, so Im spoiled for choice in terms of fancy single origin coffee spots, but if you guys know any good light roasts, Im all ears.

I bought a cheap "moka" coffee pot for 3 USD because I saw one on sale, looks like >>16392401 and for the first cup I made, I used a relatively fine-medium coarse ground and it tastes really fruity. It's not thick like espresso usually is, but it tastes good to me.
Any tips on making coffee with it? I don't have a ton of money to throw around so stuff like a v60 is off the table for me, but I do want to try out some different methods with this thing.

You can't afford $15 for a quality product but you will gladly pay $3 for chinkshit knockoffs of already bad products? What the fuck is wrong with poor people?

coffee has to come out as slowly as possible without channeling, so go a little bit finer every brew until you get channeling, then go back one setting coarser

I'd rather get a mediocre but cheap product before I buy an expensive and good product and invest into it

Nah, it'll just be a different cup compared to a paper or cloth filter. Just get a plastic v60 and try shit out until you're happy. Could spend a bit more for a hario switch. I could see that working well with preground for a while.

The stainless steel washer thing on the end of my mueller french press is missing. Is there an equivalent I can use that doesn't involve getting a whole new set of replacement parts?

In such cases I usually take the thinger with me to the hardware store and go through all thr drawers until I find one that fits. SS selection is smaller, but sometimes you get lucky.

You may not find the nut you need in stainless, but you can probably use regular steel just fine for a little while. Once you know the exact size of the thing you need you can order one online from a fastener store for like a dollar or two.

I had a metal one for a while, it eventually clogged and stalls every brew now even after cleaning religiously, i.e. soaked in white vinegar and scrubbed, covered in baking soda paste and scrubbed, regular soap, etc. Made good coffee while it lasted!

Does anyone have tips on how to clean those fucking things?

I was posting videos of shots I pulled on my flair for a while. Just got a new grinder (1zpresso JE-Plus) so if people are interested in seeing a progression of me dialing it in I could start making webms again
>>16419060
I don't have a profiler but could set up a camera to watch my flair pressure gauge and then extract the info and plot in python if there's any interest, but that might be too autistic even for me.

Anyway, I've been enjoying the shots I've been getting, and when I pull one I don't like, I just make an americano and have a stroopwafel with it to counteract the bitter/sour
