Hard tack was traditionally made with nothing but flour, salt and water, then baked 3 times until it became a rock hard and completely dry cracker. They were a staple food in the Royal Navy back in the 18th and 19th Centuries. Despite lacking in flavour and being difficult to eat, they had a theoretically unlimited shelf life, provided they were not exposed to weevils and kept dry.

I made some myself as an experiment a few years back. I nearly broke a tooth trying to bite in. Eventually had to smash it with a hammer amd the flavourless pieces dropped to the bottom of my stomach like rocks. I think they really need to be reconstituted with water and eaten with something else to be palatable.
