Why the fuck did no one tell me olives taste like heaven?

Not all of them are good. imo kalamatas are fucking vile, and both look and taste like I just crammed them up my ass.

If you're from (south) Germany, get those while they still have them, they're only available for a limited time.

You've got to understand most Americans were raised on those no-pit no-oil martini-garnish olives (green with pimento) and fake-oxidized pizza toppings (black olives). They are trash as food.

Decent table olives weren't common in America until recently.

no i did not say manzanilla, nor kalimata. "green" and "black" olives that have been popular in america for decades and sold in all american grocery stores are not the same as normal olives that happen to be green or black in color.

this is the style of canned black olives that was available in american grocery stores since the Pizza Hut generation of pizza chains popularized these things in like the 1970s and 80s. they aren't traditional and they aren't good by themselves. they are often force-oxidized to blacken them in place of actual ripening.

to quote wikipedia:
>Manzanillas have been a popular variety in California since the 1960s. The "California black-ripe" curing method, developed circa 1905-1910,[9] has led to the Manzanilla variety mainly being used for canned black olives.[10] These are labeled as "ripe" green olives that have been cured.[11]

i really can't emphasize enough that these things are not the same as a "manzanilla olive" you would get in europe.

You really get what you pay for with olives, vacuum packed ones are usually the best.
