>"I was being judged by people who had less knowledge than me, so what was it truly worth? I gave Michelin inspectors too much respect, and I belittled myself. I had three options: I could be a prisoner of my world and continue to work six days a week, I could live a lie and charge high prices and not be behind the stove or I could give my stars back, spend time with my children and re-invent myself."

Michelin reviewers have long ago spilled the beans how stupid their jobs were, the income, the selection processes, the everything. Anyone who places any worth on a business/chef getting stars or not getting stars is an idiot. They weren't earned by worth alone. It is political, and even random, and nothing more. A person using the Guide to actually pick and choose destinations along their road trip can know that at least someone ate there anonymously once, and got a level of service and food at that moment in time, if they were honest, and that's about it. By contrast, ZAGAT had reviewers who were known to be epicures, and people with great experience, whether in the industry, or just being very rich and cultured, and vast dining lifestyles. They were hand picked judges of caliber.

Everyone knows that Marco Pierre White just lazed out and quit, drugs and alcohol can do that when your job requires a lot of effort. He failed in business in that he could have managed a restaurant more hands off if he could train people properly, and didn't need to re-invent himself, but he was probably unable to grow above that when in the thick of depression, drugs and alcohol. Look at his failure with at least one of his children. Geesh, something was wrong at home, from finances to proper parenting. Someone actually successful and skilled would rip a kid out of a bad situation fast, but it's in the genes. The guy is a known bully.

Gordon on the other hand is the opposite. His infamous grilled cheese sandwich video is one example. The fact that he's a businessman who roves around his restaurant locations and does not actually cook daily as Marco did, is another. He's a franchise.

Neither are actual Chefs anymore in the traditional manner. Marco is honest about it, Gordon is not.

He got his Michelin stars thanks to his mentors, his work ethic and his excellent staff and despite his arrogance and cocaine addiction.

Michelin is a French tire company interested in French tourists using their tires.

They're unfair, controversial, fashion minded and biased. But their formula works.

Follow the logic here for a moment.

Gordon is a multi starred Chef.He is therefore an authority on all things cooking related. If he says boil an egg three minutes, it must be the right way. If he says the souffle must rest for 10 minutes, well he's obviously correct there as well. He IS the authority.

So when he burns the bread on a grilled cheese sandwich because he uses a thin stamped pan over a raging hearth fire, in which he specifies a type of cheese others might find unsuitable for the task and which fails to melt, he is actually correct and we must be incorrect.

He is the Chef, and we are not. Therefore the superior manner in which to make grilled cheese sandwiches must be to burn the bread, use a hard type of cheese, a thin pan and excessive heat.

We have been thinking about and making grilled cheese in an entirely incorrect manner all this time. In fact what we've been making and eating might not even have been actual grilled cheese sandwiches all along., and Gordon has helped us begin to see this.

He was right by accident, they're meaningless not because the people are less expert than him, but because they're expert.
Food is made for the people who eat it. In this case rich retards who think paying more for "culinary masterpieces" is worthwhile, but in a broader sense, the value of any food not eaten simply to remain alive is purely the enjoyment it brings the person eating it. Technically, that makes more expensive food better to someone who enjoys the feeling of paying a lot for food, though that's pretty stupid.
Food made with ingredients indistinguishable from cheaper ingredients by the person eating it is no better than if it were made using those cheaper ingredients.
Food made using ingredients most people find bland or repulsive or unpleasant but select people find "exciting" either through genuine overexposure to flavor, sense of adventure, or more commonly through being pretentious twats: is worse than just regular good food.

Food is not art.
Food is food.
And art is not even what these assholes pretend it is, to begin with.
If a chef wants their food to be considered art, they should call themselves a "sandwich artist" instead and serve it in museums rather than restaurants.

Not coping in the least. Show me the bio of an excessively wealthy individual (who did not inherit the money) who is well known for being a wonderful individual. >For almost a decade, the mysterious theft of a reservation book from the top London restaurant where Gordon Ramsay made his name has baffled the culinary world.

>An unidentified man pulled up outside the Aubergine restaurant on a scooter, dived in, snatched the book - in the days before computerised bookings, a serious act of sabotage - and bolted.

>Ramsay, then head chef, pointed the finger at his mentor turned nemesis, Marco Pierre White, who, he believed, wanted to depose him and take over the Michelin starred Chelsea restaurant.

>The person behind the 1998 robbery was never identified. Until now. "It was me," Ramsay has admitted. "I nicked it. I blamed Marco. Because I knew that would fuck him and that it would call off the dogs ... I still have the book in a safe at home."

>He arranged for the biker to steal it, he explained. "It was my one stroke of genius, fucking someone over without his knowing that I was the one who done it. And the [restaurant owners] cutting Marco off and wanting to get closer to me, kissing my ass ... You always eat that fucking revenge when it's cold, don't you? Trust me, this was stone cold."

The main distinction is that art is primarily about aesthetic when with food the artistry is of secondary concern compared to the taste and nutritional aspects of the dish. It's like with cars, styling is important to a lot of people but at its core a car is something that fulfills a purpose and it doesn't need to look good in order to do it, and a lot of people would rather drive a car that's ugly but well engineered than a good looking car that's kinda shit underneath.

It began with the forging of the Great Stocks. Three were given to the Bovril, oldest, simplest and meatiest of all pastes. Seven to the Bisto-Lords, great gravies and aahsmen of the luncheon halls. And nine, nine cubes were gifted to the race of Oxo, who above all else desire flavour. For within these stocks was bound the savoury and the salt to enrich each meal. But they were all of them deceived, for another stock was made. Deep in the land of Knorrdorr, on the Stoves of Chez Nico, the Dark Lord Marcon forged a master stock, and into this pot he poured his choice (there’s no real recipe), his gARRnish and his will to add olive oil to all dishes.

As an Englishman I think the uk is in large part to blame because a lot of British staples are fucking awful. I don’t mean “le bread sandwich” because I have never known a single person who has had one, but there are many issues with the ways most British people cook, boiling everything, applying little or no seasoning, and worst of all is the overuse of heinz baked beans, I’ve seen retards use Heinz beans on everything, not just the atrocity of beans on toast but combining it with almost any meal, at university I watched as a housemate used beans as a substitute for pasta sauce

I saw an anecdote by a rich guy who tried 2 different 2-star ones. He said the food was frequently oversalted and otherwise not that great, and all the money he paid basically went into sitting in a highly decorated restaurant interior for the atmosphere and experience, not the food. He regretted it and wished he skipped trying it since a simple can of Amy's lentil soup wouldve tasted better

Yes. Italians have pasta dishes with beans and with chickpeas as well. It's very good, but I doubt it would be very good with canned beans in tomato sauce, so I kinda get his point.

That wasn't my argument though, I was more arguing that artistry in food, as in cars, only exists as a deliberate effort made by the creator. It's the difference between a Ferrari Testarossa and a Nissan Sentra, one's built with passion and heart whereas the other is just a product.

This argument is retarded. The only thing that makes something art is if enough people get together in one spot and agree that it's art. That's it. That's why you've got all those meme modern art pieces that are literally just toilet bowls and shit and are still accepted as art. People first started doing it to parody this exact attitude and show why it was stupid, but instead of learning their lesson the art community embraced this attitude wholeheartedly and now literally anything can be art.

Nope, that shit exists to rip-off morons and to launder money. Modern art is trash and incomprehensible because it's easy to make "art" that fits a preconceived art market; read The Painted Word.

>Some people ask, how do you stop the cheerleader from screaming and alerting the cops or the neighbors when she's tied up in the trunk of your car?
>And it's simple; cut out her throat. No more screaming, and draining the blood will make the meat more tender when you cook her thighs later.
>But it's your choice, everyone's different. Some people like the screaming.
