I lived in Tunis for one summer before covid.
Weirdest food I had was called Lablabi.
>guy gives you old stale baguette and a bowl
>you have to sit down and rip up the baguette to small pieces in the bowl
>you bring the bowl back to the guy and he pours some hot chickpea broth over the baguette
>puts in shitton of harissa
>dumps in a can of tuna
>cracks in raw egg
>some olives on top
>go back to your table and mix it up until it has a consistency of mashed potatoes and eat
>also some weird pickled carrots as a side

Apparently this eas the go-to cheap food there and everybody loved it. It cost under 0,5$ and it didn't make me shit myself as much as other foods, but it tasted really weird.

idk dude I don't really think of myself like that, I feel awkward and stuff like anyone else does, I just kinda push through it. All of that shit just kinda happened by chance, I feel like I just fell into it all rather than making it happen, it was definitely the most eventful week I spent there out of the two months I was in Vietnam. I went from Saigon to Da Nang but I kinda feel like I wasted a bunch of my time there by fucking around in resorts and not going out and just wandering as much as I should have, cause that's how you end up in those situations. I only met the Vietnamese girls because there was a puppy, and I met the Ukrainian girl because one of the Vietnamese girls had a big sister who owned the bar and her husband was this Italian/Canadian guy who I ran into when I was looking for a barber and he gave me a ride to one, and while I was walking back to the hotel this hot girl waved at me and I went over to say hello and it was Yana, and then I only met the English guy and the expats because I met Yana and ended up talking to her and Max for so long. But I mean I spent plenty of nights in Saigon just sitting in random bars completely alone talking to no one because I'm not some social butterfly. I can hold my own in convo but I'm not so extroverted that I just approach random people all the time.

It's an amazing country, the people are super friendly, they don't really take advantage of foreigners, and if they do it's such a petty amount of money that it's meaningless. Some dude charged me 150k for a fake zippo and the girl I was with was like you got scammed, and then said I could have paid 100k, it's like 2 quid difference, means nothing to me but means a lot to them. I used to tip housekeepers and bellboys and shit with like 200k vnd which is like 7 quid, and they were so thankful, it's crazy. If you can ride a motorcycle or a scooter I would absolutely recommend going, for a few grand you can spend months there absolutely chilling.

>She knows I’m a ramen fanatic, and had looked up some rural place close to the destination which supposedly made some of the best Wakayama-style ramen
>Tells me about it when we’re almost there
>No ramen shop to be seen. Turn around, go other way, turn around again; the only thing where her phone says it should be is some small grungy mechanic shop
Turns out that WAS the place; basically a garage with a side-room that had a kitchen in the corner and a few tables. The family that owned it was cool as fuck.
The father and son are motorcycle mechanics and the son also raced. When the ramen bit is open, the dad and his wife ran it while their son wrenched on bikes.

So some of the best ramen I’ve ever had was in a backwoods (for Japan) motorcycle repair shop.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm admittedly quite the social recluse and very infrequently leave my home, so I don't know how I'd fare in such a scenario. So, it is interesting to read about such events. What pushed you to go to Vietnam in particular anyway? As much as I lack confidence for such a trip, I would like to live like you did someday, even if only for a short while.

When I was young I think I saw Bourdain's A Cook's Tour, the Thailand episode, and that planted the seed, so I always wanted to go to Thailand. Then when I got a bit older I ended up getting a motorcycle to commute, and then fell in love with riding. The flame for Thailand was still burning in the back of my mind, and researching that put me onto Vietnam, which is famous for backpackers doing a cross county motorcycle trip, and that's what ended up changing my mind and I was set on going there. I wasn't ever making concrete plans until my gran passed and it kinda kicked my mortality into the forefront of my mind, and I decided then that I was going to do it and started saving aggressively. I went with 5 grand and kinda blew through it in like 2 months and some change, I was in Bangkok for a week too. I could have comfortably gotten 6 months out of that much though, I was just balling out in super nice hotels like a retard, the hostels really are comfortable enough to get by on.

The way to look at it is you're not getting any younger, you could literally have a brain aneurysm tomorrow and most of your life will have been spent in between the same 4 walls looking at the same dumb shit on a screen. If this is stuff you want to do just do it, I booked a 1 way ticket with absolutely no plan, didn't book a hotel until I landed, shit isn't hard to figure out these days if you're internet savvy. Hotel apps like booking are worldwide. Data sims are super cheap in SEA and airports always have free wifi.

There was a time when I used to be crippled with social anxiety, like I'd get invited to house parties as a teenager, get all dressed to go and then end up not going because my shitty brain would convince me it was some elaborate ruse to mock me, even times where I forced myself to go I'd be paranoid while I was there, convinced everyone was making jokes at my expense. It's a shitty demon that only you can fight, and repeated exposure is the sword to kill it.

I live in Japan and people here genuinely think that corn on pizza is delicious and some sort of hidden italian delicacy. People here are really fucking nuts about italian food but can never remotely cook anything like it. There are loads upon loads of "italian" restaurants here but when you go in it's always some weird fucking japanese ripoff where they fuck up all of the dishes by adding jap shit like raw squid and eel and shit to it and then they try to fucking play it off as "real italian food". It doesn't help that people here don't know what normal bread or cheese is. It's all fucking gross. I have not had any normal-tasting cheese in all the time I've lived here, and good bread is about as rare as a properly paid salaryman. These people are born on this island, they will live their whole lives on this island, and they will die on this island without ever tasting real bread or cheese in their life and that's just sort of sad. The worst part is that because no japanese person actually knows what real italian food is like, nobody can call restaurants out on this bullshit, everyone eats it all up and calls it "honto ni umaiiiii uwuwuwu" and everyone thinks this is what real italian food is like. It's just sad. "Oh rettsu addu fishu eggu andu seaweedu to pasta carbonara don't u kno this is how rearu itarian peeporu eat!". The worst part for me is that japan doesn't just massacre classic italian food like this, but they also do it with every other country's cuisine imaginable. French, spanish, mexican, turkish, you name it. They botch everything they come across as "wow foreign so cool" but it's never apparently fucking good enough unless they douse it in soy sauce and raw octopus to make it "authentic european" food. Don't get me wrong I love me some japanese food but fuck this country for ruining foreign food culture and fuck the people for being too retarded to not know what real food is like, even though they kind of can't help it, fuck em it's gross

Just to ask, you think an Italian cook could open a real Italian restaurant and be successful in jap?
Also, corn in pizza is a trash classic here. The recipe is corn, cheese, cream and ham. It's Panna prosciutto e mais or pizza mimosa. Google it and eat it if you can, it's good.
Another kind is swap corn with mushrooms.

>asking a serious question in a reply to stale pasta
It’s okay, anon. We’ve all done it once.

As for your question, it *could* definitely be possible. But as far as the business itself goes, it may be difficult to do such a thing outside of Tokyo. Maybe Osaka. But most of the Italian restaurants run by Japanese chefs who studied in Italy are in Tokyo for that very reason.
It’s also difficult to just move to Japan, unless you’ve been offered a job or are going to attend school. Applying for residency “so I can open a business” is only possible if you explain what you’re going to do, and show you have a ton of money to immediately spend on doing so. Even then, it’s no guarantee, it only lets you “apply”.
Marrying a Japanese national will make it as close to “easy” as possible, but *still* doesn’t 100% guarantee you residency to run a business.
