I did actual useful research for the university and worked as a secretary for one of the professors in my degree and was a TA and got maybe a reduction on class/lab fees. You can't sweet-talk your way into an administrative position without lying on your resume about your experience and having a degree.

Only other way you got away with it is daddy or daddy's friend giving you that job.

You can get away with this for so long, anon. Eventually you will get figured out, fired, and blacklisted making it hard to find any job in that same field.

>contrary to wagie memes, pay is decent for a single person. have enough saved to live very comfortably, take time off of work to travel, invested enough to retire. job offers 401K and health insurance

line cooking has been good to me. i forget that there are people making $14/h at chipotle who are working in the same field, economic and social class as me, and that's what people think of when they think 'line cooks'. If you can get a job at a fine dining place that does high volume, you can make a career out of it. One of my tournants came directly from Hooter's. Another really good chef i worked for was a Romanian guy who couldn't read. Anyone can get these jobs, you just have to dedicate yourself to improving and learning. the credentials to become a successful food worker are pretty lax.

And you can always move up the ladder. If you're 40 and still just a line cuck, then you truly fucked up somewhere. I worked my way up until I was a bona fide chef, and from there started my own restaurant. Survived the lockdowns only to finally sell off the place, because my old crew used their gibs to better themselves and I couldn't find anyone to replace them, which was fine because I just got a food truck and I've been taking home far more in profit than I ever did with the old store, and I've been able to get away from the administrative side of things and go back to just cooking for fun. I open and close whenever and wherever I feel like it, I make whatever I feel like making and I always do a lot of business. I do miss making dick jokes with the boys.

we always ran a skeleton crew and people would whine about being understaffed, until we did schedule a lot of people for crazy nights like superbowl and then they're all "why is there so many people here why am i here can i go home this is stupid"
no, none of what you posted is me, I know how to function overstaffed or understaffed though it did take me a little while to figure that part out it's not hard to just keep a positive attitude and be a cog in the wheel. Kitchen work is all about attitude
What actually inspired me to get into kitchens was hearing my buddy talk about kitchen life all the time, I wanted to experience it so that's why I settled for Subway when I found myself needing a job even though up until that point in my life I had no intention of working with food at all, not for a wage. He always had crazy stories to tell and bragged about his skills and the kitchen politics always sounded pretty brutal. I wasn't at a great place in life at that point in time either

At the restaurant I started as a driver and I started doing dishes and helping out even though I didn't have to. Sometimes the owner would throw me $10, sometimes he wouldn't. The food was really good so I soaked up as much knowledge as I could. A short order cook decided to do heroin one night and sent the boss a 4 page text apologizing about how he was gonna miss his shift so I took his job over. Became the "manager" pretty quickly but it was really just a title. Leader, sure, but didn't do much managing besides doing the food order and taking accountability for a bunch of shit that I didn't have control over. The place was purgatory and I gave it everything I had and I'm glad it's over. Bought chainlink in 2018 and I have time to think about my next move in life. My last day there I broke my hand. I'm all healed up from that and I'm keeping busy. Reacquainting myself with computers and math

>> No.16198348

Let it go and realize it's just part of the job. The issue the people in these threads is the idea that you're not a "real cook" unless you have enough things to complain about. They wallow in their own self pity without actually doing anything to make their lives better.

As far as "tedious items" go, its only tedious if you make it tedious. Its often a garde manger complaint that they feel like they're doing nothing but bottom bitch work day in day out and that they aren't getting anything out of it. But most of them fail to realize that its the tedious shit thats easiest to improve upon. You should take everything you work on as a challenge to yourself to improve. How finely can I get my knifework, how consistant, how fast? Shit like that is how you better yourself and make yourself stand out from your coworkers.

grim post chief. markets trend toward efficiency by their own accord. its not efficient to have ten thousand of the same or similar small business. imagine ten thousand hardware stores in your city. doesnt work. thats why restaurants have one of the highest failure rates out of any business -- there are too many and they are all the same. same with coffee shops.

big businesses absorb smaller businesses, and people work for the big businesses that remain. thats what makes them big. i literally cant even imagine what its like being such a braindead fucking retard that you think the reason most people work for others is because of "risk-aversion". what a complete fucking absolute buffoon you are.

This. The younger you are the more likely you are to get promotions actually. Of course you won't get to the top when you're young, but companies want good employees to stay and motivate others to do good work. If you just show interest, make an extra effort, you will be compensated. And maybe you're unlucky and don't get a promotion you think you deserved, you can quit and tell your new employer that you weren't allowed to grow, they'll eat that shit up.

About what specifically?

The gubmint has nearly unlimited funds if you want to pursue your first college degree. Even moreso if you are a poorfag. You apply for a FAFSA, see what they will pay and go from there.

It's stupid to go straight to university as a true Freshman. Go to a 2 year community college. It will still be paid for, you will have to take the same courses if at university, but the tution is about 10% cheaper. Going full time will give you some grants, and you will still have time to work a PT gig for a couple years.

You then transfer in as a Junior at a 4-year institution where you actually start working on your degree. No _______101 courses. You can then stay in the dorms like a moron or take your college bucks and get an apartment. You apply for jobs on campus, and you get even more perks like tuition reimbursement. Federal Work Study also pays where you literally work and study. Balancing school and work is easier when it's all intertwined and line cook at a university kitchen basically means you eat free every day.

After two years of working and studying, you graduate with a BS/BA. You probably have $20-$30K of debt if you went CC/Associates first and go to a mid-tier state school.

You now have a stupid piece of paper that opens doors across the US. Maybe you use it to go teach Engrish in Nipponland or all the other shit that gets posted here. College (in the US) is a scam, but there are enough resources for anyone who wants to leave the kitchen for good for a stable career is only stopped by themselves.
