Don't make the mistake I made and go to cooking school. It is a waste of money, time and does not at all help you find a better job. It costs more than normal college and you come out of it with less skills than a womans studies degree. Please if you are considering it, don't.

Can confirm. I got hired at a nice restaurant by a friend connection as a dishwasher and they like my work ethic so much they're making me a line/bar cook with a nice pay bump, and it's only been a month and a half. I don't know a damned thing about cooking, but I'll basically learn everything I /need/ to know for free now. Fancy shit, too; italian, french, contemporary, the works. Most of my peers near my age have degrees/scholarships for cooking programs, but me and a few other cooks are just alcoholic pothead rock'n'rollers. And we get paid just as much if not more than (You) will in the same position.

Also in general, just get the fuck out of cooking if you don't love it. I know I will once I stack some bread (haha food pun, get it? kill me yesterday)

That's because you fucked up the logistics. You should have done a 4-year stint in the Army as a cook, then got out and used that post-9/11 GI Bill to pay for culinary school. All the education you'd ever need or want, costing you only some time in uniform where your main job was to cook and learn from other Army cooks all their secrets, all while getting paid, then layer that with the fancy shit culinary school would add to your arms locker, and you'd pay nothing.

If they really wanted to teach you how to do a job then school would be 90% hands on experience, but that would just be way too efficient and would put most teachers out of a job. Dude in webm is a retard, but I suppose the majority of people are similarly retarded. Getting a degree and getting whatever job doesn't give you a life, unless you're the exception and work doing something you absolutely love. For like 99% of people any job with any degree is no different than picking up a trade or even selling your menial physical labor. It is a way to gain an income, nothing more nothing less. You trade your service for money. It is not your life or your personality or identity, just something you do in order to collect capital. >You trade your service for money. It is not your life or your personality or identity,
This is great on paper
In reality
>sleep 8 hours a day
>work 8 hours a day
That leaves you 8 hours a day for "finding meaning" or "building a life"
Just dont forget the fact that those 8 hours are chipped away even further.
You spend a decent amount of time in the morning getting ready for work. You spend time commuting to work. You spend time commuting home from work. You spend time at night getting ready for the next morning.
And then there is incidental garbage you do during those 8 hours like small chores or taking a shit.
A good chunk of your "free time" time revolves around being at work, or thinking about and getting ready for that work.

Not to mention a lot of jobs force overtime or you are on call, or some people work more than 40 hours a week.

If you take the webm at face value, obviously your job isnt going to give you a life. Obviously buying a fucking car isnt the end all be all of life.
But the reality is once you have a real, soul crushing job, its pretty hard to build a life around it because of how encompassing it is.

I went to school, got a salary career job
Got a mortgage on a modest house in an ok but not super expensive neighborhood. Bought a new car. The idea was
>pay off house, pay off car, pay off student loans
>credit will be good at that point
>buy really nice house, rent modest house out

Had a GF, would come home tired. Play video games, watch movies. On the weekends go out to eat and maybe hike or frisbee golf. Even when I was having free time, I couldnt stop thinking about work and dreading it.
I was burnt out and wanted to kill myself at the thought of it.

Then one of my immediate family members I was very close with died.
Everyone knows its a fact of life, but you dont understand the gravity of death until it affects you personally.

I hit a breaking point and decided that time was by far the most important thing to me.
Time for myself. Time for rest. Time to be with my friends and family.

If I was to climb the ladder and start making big bucks, what would that accomplish?
Allow me to consoom? Allow me to travel (I dont care)?
I would still spend a good chunk of free time doing the same shit I already do.
And at what cost?
I had lost touch with friends. I saw my brothers and parents only a few times a year.
Work ruined my mental and physical health.

One day I just woke up and quit.
Took my savings, paid off house, already had some passive income. I have a /diy/ hobby which I make money with.

I work an easy bare minimum job 3-4 days a week that pays all of my bills. I like the people I work with, I browse the internet most of my shift.

Once you own a house in a safe area, everything else becomes so much easier. My life has never been better.
I dont regret school, 4 years of partying and making friends. But I wish I had this goal in mind from the beginning.
Save up every penny, working a hard job as a means to an end once you have set yourself with a house. Not working yourself to death till you are 70 so you can consoom

I drop university when I was 24 to become a cook and after years of wading through shit I ended up becoming a pastry chef. I am still not happy with where I am at 32 but I dont regret dropping my studies. The total amount of "cooking school" I actually did was something like 200 hours of a pastry-specific course that had 6 months of actual work attached to it before an exam: no amount of school can ever prepare you to the stuff you actually have to deal with on the job. I think the right amount of time for someone to become truly competent as a cook or a baker is about 3 years of working every day and I dont think there is a school that prepare you enough.

Schools are nice if you are going to work in daddy's business and you are somehow able to skip all the "wading through shit" phase and just start your own business: people who are successful this way end up in television or doing youtube content or taking pretty pictures of their food.

2020 being the shitshow that it was kinda fucked over all my plans to move up a little: lost a couple of collegues, business is just very slowly picking up only now and I'm stuck doing the most basic shit because the owners can't afford to pay more employees. I am not happy with how things are going here I am sure that I'm not going to find a better job any time this year and it sucks even more because honestly I have no right to complain, still actually having a job and not even far from home.

Former dishie, current line cuck here. All that excitement will vanish after a week, and you'll realize that cucking, I mean, cooking is even more soul crushing that being a dish bitch, you barely get paid more and it's not even worth it.
As for op, I can't imagine why anyone would take out loans to go to school for a job that, at best, pays $14/hr, requires long and weird hours, allows for no social life, and junkie dropout felons like me can get into with zero training or experience.
