You see, pounds and ounces are common units of measurement used throughout the centuries by many countries. They're standards by which the weight equated to often varied and this (granted the following is an oversimplification) lead to France adopting what is commonly known as the "metric" system and said system gradually spread throughout the world with many adopters a cross the world.
