It's true, the pickles are what seal the deal. Every other fucking place especially chic fil a has the most pathetic thin floppy warm turns slimy mush in your mouth pickles. It makes me so mad chic would win if they just had good pickles. The first time I had the popeyes sandwich and I bit into that thick firm crisp pickle with a snap and could actually taste more than vinegar it was a life changing experience.

I don't think they are similar enough to compete, it's more like two sides of the same coin.
Popeyes has the number one spot as the heavily floured and deep-fried chicken sandwich.
Meanwhile CFA has a more cutlet like approach with less crumbly breading.
It's like comparing buffalo wings to fried chicken wings. They're both chicken but in slightly different categories.

McD's sandwich is definitely a CFA clone, and not a terrible one either, if you get it fresh. That's one of the main things that makes CFA so good also. You're pretty much guaranteed to get a fresh piece of chicken and that goes a looong way for me at least.
