16041881 No.16041881 [Reply] [Original]

How the FUCK do I get my parents to not keep the fridge stuffed with food that is more than a week old, sometimes a month old. It’s basically fucking hoarding at this point. The worst part is I offer to clean it out solely by myself but they complain and will try to “catch” me throwing out something “good”. This inevitably will not be touched for another two weeks before eventually being discarded. Please help

>Why, I too have extremely spoiled, immature, and financially successful, fat American boomer parents, how could you tell?

>those premade biscuit dough tubes
wew lad, mine keep 2-3 of those on hand at all times, make them, burn them, and then don't refrigerate them

kek I've found shit that was multiple YEARS out of date in my parents' fridges and freezers* and pantry many, many, many times

>never cleaned/cleaned out, ever
>always letting shit get moldy
>forgetting about something, buying more of it, forgetting about that one too
>most everything in the freezer is a year old if not more, encased in freezer burn
>containers often not even closed
>spills everywhere
>literally all of it is horrible junk garbage, there's maybe 1 token fresh vegetable in the entire house other than onions
>its all prepared shit, because they never, ever cook, and never, ever have

They throw out thousands of dollars of shit each year. They were spending around $100/day on food for a long time, because constant takeout/restaurants multiple times a day. Now its down to "only" about $1000/month

*that's not a typo, they have 2 fridges and 2 freezers, both filled with garbage all the time

Honestly, I can't complain

>Local grocery store has been having some major sales each week for the last month.
>Been stocking up on a bunch of stuff, both in the fridge and freezer and non-perishables.
>Freezer is overflowing to the point where I had to take some older stuff out to prepare to fit the new stuff in.
>Barely have scratched the surface of the food I got due to them constantly having sales.
>Pantry of stuff that won't expire for awhile is starting to have a ton of stuff in it.

Granted, what I have been doing is trying to go through the older stuff first and making a combo of things for lunch/dinner for the last few weeks and just trying to cook more. Anon, you could always just mark what is about to expire and offer to cook it for them or find recipes that combine multiple things.

>> No.16042003

I dont think the problem is that he has no unexpired food, there is just too much expired food in the family fridge and it's a pig sty. He'd have to buy his own mini fridge to side step putting up with the junk

thats why hoarding is a problem. find a therapist for them and hire some professionals they might be more responsive to them than what you're doing since they know how to do them and you don't. it's not just the act of doing that but the way you're going about it and how to solve the core issue which requires education and experience.

It’s impossible. I have parents in law who do this. We’ve thrown out their entire fridge and freezer, refilled it for them, and given them money to compensate for doing that to them multiple times, but they are hoarders and will never stop. Recently my MIL has bragged about clearing out the deep freezer and clearing out some of her basement (another fridge and freezer down there as well), and it just seems more like she loves stuff around and shaves down on a few things until the next sale catches her eyes. I refuse to stay in their home anymore, which means I may not see them more than once a year anymore since it would apparently be too much of an insult to stay at a nearby hotel.

Don't bother. Just live with it, old people will never change. Plus it's their fridge, if they don't feel like changing their habits they don't have to. Just put the nice stuff that you buy for yourself in a shopping bag and keep it tucked in the back of the fridge so that they can't mess with it and leave it at that. Meanwhile, just imagine your nice clean fridge when you finally move out at age 35 and can finally start working on losing your virginity.
