Is saffron way overrated or am I just missing something? I've tried cooking it into risotto, curries, and even made an actual saffron rice and I don't get it. It just tastes like I'm licking a chain linked fence and then eating some rice.

Okay, so what do you use saffron for in such a way that compliments your superior palate? Don't be a typical fuck ass /ck/ poster. Make an attempt at explaining your response. Come on, indulge me.

it adds fragrant smells and nice color to a dish
that's pretty much it.
want your rice to look yellow and smell fucking amazing?
yeah you add one piece to like 10kg of rice and you're set

Yeah I mean I guess that's my point. It's just over-glorified food dye that adds just a slight metallic flavor. The saffron rice I made last night was great, perfectly executed, etc. However, it was much more the cardamom, cloves, and cumin seeds that gave the rice its actual aromatic flavor. I guess my conclusion is that saffron by itself is nothing, but when added to some spices, the subtlety it adds goes a long way.

Where are you from? If you're not from Iran or Afghanistan, or at least have Iranian heritage, then you would not understand Saffron use properly.

Totally. Not worth the money. Turmeric or achiote have better flavors and still make food look pretty.

no, it's overrated. and it stains fucking everything it touches. i had a sock with a giant splotch on the bottom because i'd stepped on a stray molecule of saffron

You can buy saffron crocus. Grow your own and harvest with tweezers, anon. Lifetime supply.

I think the point is that it is subtle. It doesn't overwhelm the senses and drown out the taste of anything else you add, but is still 'present' enough that there is a noticeable change when you eat it with other things. As for price, I think it's just because of difficulty harvesting it. Like Sharkfin soup. It's nothing to write home about, and the synthetic stuff is far easier to get, but it's still expensive just because

There isn't much flavor but that's not what it's for. The effect of saffron are that of MDA or MDMA. It's great for relaxing and lifts your mood. Make it into tea or in a cold drink. Maybe even into a cocktail.

This. The palatability of saffron is tied to a genetic component associated with high levels of inbreeding and long hot days with exposure to lots of cosmic radiation.
If you don't have it you can't fully appreciate it.

saffron is really popular in Italy as well and used in many traditional recipes.
everyone here can appreciate its distinctive aroma. I've never heard retards saying shit like "it's just expensive food dye" before coming to 4chan

The fact that it's expensive doesn't make it inherently better dude. It's just another flavor, and if you don't like it then it's fine, there's nothing to "get". Salt is probably the cheapest "spice" in the world yet it's the most versatile and most used.

your mom is right. the powdered stuff, provided that it's 100% real saffron and not a scam, is more effective in seasoning your dish (ie it takes less of it to give more flavor).
whole saffron threads may look cool in a risotto, but you need a lot of those to actually taste it.
I live near Milan, the birthplace of the saffron-flavored "risotto alla milanese", and almost everyone here use pic related. it's reasonably cheap, but I guarantee that it's the real deal.
a pack of 4 sachets is like 4-5 euros and each sachet is enough for 2 persons.
