Yeah Old Country buffet is widely mocked for being a boomer restaurant, South Park even did an episode on it. The food was pretty meh when I went but I found the early 90's esque decor particularly awful, along with the bright lighting which gave it the ambiance of a school cafeteria.

I've never been to Vegas or Atlantic City, but I went to a casino in Oregon called Spirit Mountain and they had a good buffet. Fresh seafood, good prime rib, fresh bakery stuff made in-house, etc. My favorite part was the shrimp bar where they sauteed fresh shrimp to order however you like it, fried catfish, and jambalaya. Oh, and the from-scratch chocolate eclairs. The entire buffet was super nice-looking and clean, too.

Although, it was a couple years ago, and it cost $24 per person.

Top 3
The Wicked Spoon, Cosmopalitan Las Vegas - lots of foodie type selections that are mostly plated for you creatively and a Helluva gellato bar.
Madras Pavillion, ITC Gran Chola Chennai, India - huge selection of local and international foods, made to order dosas and amazing service by an army of workers
Citrus, Leela Palace Bangalore, India - much like the previous five star hotel's buffet but in a better setting with both in and outdoor seating because it's actually nice outside in Bangalore.
Middle 3
Any Chinese buffet - they're all kinda OK.
Golden Corral when they first open in the morning- they're all kinda OK and the made to order omelets and fried chicken is really the only reason I went. Bread was ok.
Pizza Hut - the ones that still have buffets are kinda ok,especially at the 6-7 bucks price point my local has.
Bottom 3
Golden Corral more than 30 minutes after opening - fuck no.
Cici's - fuck no.
Olde Country Buffet - fuck no plus food poisoning. I hear it's a chain but I went to the one on Bryan, TX just once. Never again.
University 3 (1998-2000)
Sbisa - ok
The one semester there was a makeshift buffet in the MSS when Sbisa was closed for renovations - ok.
The Commons - not ok.

Most casino buffets are somewhere between my top and middle 3. The off strip ones in Vegas that cater to locals are pretty good and also good value. Had a lot of mussels at Sam's Towns buffet and they were tasty and I ate so many it would have cost much more at a Italian restaurant. Mirage champagne brunch was good and had those magic coke machines that make everything. Also coffee machines that made espressos. The ones in downtown are mostly meh, Main Street Station used to be pretty good but has suffered in the last decade. The M Resort way south was great and included draft craft beer.
The one exception was the Sahara before it closed. Everything about that property had gotten disgusting by the time they threw in the towel.

>> No.16010848

Not a buffet, but there was this one barbecue joint when I was a kid about 70 miles from home. We would stop there every chance we could to eat.

They served everything family style. You could get a single meat or multiple meats. Also, big bowls of beans, slaw, onion rings, and a big plate of Texas toast.

They would mix their dill pickles with jalapenos and let the flavors meld for a few days so that the pickles packed some heat. (I still do this, but have learned that if you try to keep them too long, the pickles eventually become indistinguishable from the jalapenos.)

And when you finished off anything, they would bring more.

The restaurant is still there, but is a shadow of what it once was.

I know a rancher who used to regularly take his cowboys there for lunch on Fridays. They would get the three meat family style dinner.

One Friday, the cowboys finished off the first plate of ribs and started away on the second plate. The ribs were stacked several high. When they got down past the first layer, they discovered that the ribs below had already been eaten.

They all got up in unison and walked out. Didn't pay their bill at all. And they never went back.

That stupid stunt by the restaurant staff easily cost that place many tens of thousands of dollars in lost revenue since then. (Twenty or thirty cowboys eating there once every week at the most expensive item on the menu really adds up.)

Those of us who know the rancher and the cowboys (I got covid-19 from one of them and his wife) refuse to go there any more. I drive by occasionally, but won't consider stopping there.

The last time I went to a buffet, it was a cheap Chinese place in a shopping strip.

What alarmed me was the fact that practically every table of obese brown people gorging themselves had at least one cellphone or tablet blasting a video at full speaker volume. Some tables were using it as collective entertainment, while other tables had every single person with their own device, again at full speaker volume. It was a cacophony of noise.

I'm not being a "kids and their cellphones" Boomer. I gave up on that long ago. The concerning part was 30+ YouTube videos ripping at full volume and nobody cared. It was disorienting, sensory overload. The mass of obese bodies shuffling around, shoveling mountains of fried rice into their mouths; the overlapping smells of cheap desserts and soy sauce and old sushi and cheaply made clothing; the sound of small talk muffled through mouthfuls of food, of toy unboxing videos and makeup tutorials and explosions, of foreign language phone calls being made over speakerphone, of the Chinese waiters shouting at one another over the din.

I was truly in Hell.

Harvey's casino buffet in Council Bluffs, Iowa. This place opened and operated for several years in the 90s before being taken over by Harrah's.
The place operated at a budgetary loss knowingly and had really really good food, expensive food, for a really cheap cost. I think it was something like $8 for the lunch buffet and maybe $12 for the dinner and only like $4 for the breakfast. I'm kind of making these figures up but it was something really cheap like that. I have never met its equal for being like 9/10 in quality at absolute dirt cheap price. Since then I have gone to several casino buffets and they are hit or miss, some are really good but they aren't ludicrously cheap like Harvey's was. I had moved out of the area when Harrah's took them over but I heard the buffet cost and quality took a downturn afterward and never went back to try it.
