I'm not a coffee nerd. I get the cheapest bulk preground at the local store. I don't care what roast it is. I brew 5 cups in my drip machine in the morning and pour 2-3 in my mug. I pour some water into my mug to cool down the coffee so it doesn't burn me and I can drink it right away. I don't put anything else in my coffee because I could care less. I neither like nor dislike it. You have to remember that coffee is a drug. It is a very good drug, probably better than any other drug you could take, but it is not meant to be celebrated or dressed up with extra ingredients, or obsessed over about exotic beans roasted to perfection and brewed with a fancy machine. It is a tool to be used to help you with productivity. Nothing more.

So I used to drink it black when I was in college because with no car, acquiring creamer would have been a giant pain in the ass. During that time I got used to it that way and liked it, although its definitely an upgrade to go to half and half. Yes, I think hipsters who insist on drinking it black are just fronting so they can say so

if you want black coffee that actually tastes good you need to buy a 1zpresso grinder, a v60, a electric kettle with temperature control, a scale that can measure to 0.0g, and a bag of single origin beans from a specialty roaster

you can sub out the v60 for another pour over with a paper filter if you like but I have black coffee this morning that tasted like whipped cream and strawberries

It's just about familiarity. If you drink nothing but black coffee regularly for several years then that becomes what coffee is 'supposed' to taste like, and you get used to it, and in time sweet/milky coffee tastes weird.

Like at work they only have folgers, and they only have nasty dried creamer. I got used to drinking folgers black because I needed the caffeine (started at 5am) and the creamer was gross.
