I have had serious alcohol problems (drunk driving, making an idiot of myself, throwing up). Today I don’t drink hard alcohol outside of very specific scenarios, but that being said I know what hard alcohol is good. Gin was my drink of choice. The (very) basic bar has vodka, rum, and whiskey. Standard recommendations used to include gin and brandy but those are a bit out of fashion these days... probably wiser to stock bourbon, rye, and a scotch or irish. Add tequila if you feel, but in tequila NEVER buy one that isn't 100% agave - the savings are negligible for a marked loss of quality (I like the Sauza offerings).

The easiest approach here is "something brown".
Bourbon is the brownest of the brown liquors. There are a wide variety. Bottled in bond is a fair baseline; decent quality, good price, always mixable, often sippable. Always 50% alcohol. Evan Williams white label BIB is standard for a reason; pretty good all around. Wild Turkey 101 is vaguely similar, but a different flavor/aging profile. Russell's Reserve is a step up, but it's going to be differently cut (diluted) according to what their master blender thinks makes it taste best.
You can always go Jack Daniels or Jim Beam if you're looking for a 40%, or just add an ice and let it melt.
Rye is bourbon-like, but the rye grain makes it fruitier and spicier (these are subtle flavors; you need to get past the HOO-EEE THAT'S LIQUOR taste of the alcohol to appreciate it, and that often takes your palate a few years of earnest drinking).
Scotches are often smoky. I drank scotch when I hated myself (but on days when I cared enough to not drink gin); I wasn't drinking for enjoyment but the numbing of pain. There is subtlety and refinement available. Stay away from Johnnie Walker red (and probably Dewar's white); you deserve better. (JW Green is the best affordable JW. Many are fans of Monkey Shoulder; I have a soft spot for Tomatin.)
Irish is similar and different to scotch, due to a historical peculiarity of tax law.
A number of fine choices; most don't say Jameson. Clontarf is generally fine; Tullamore Dew is ok.

You can drink gin for years before you start to like it. Not a wholesome path to go down.
Vodka is easier to drink, and easier to hate yourself with. Keep around for basic mixing. Midshelf; something under $25/handle ($18/handle in WI).

Fruity sissy drinks are for shots with girls. You can overspend on premixed, or learn to make a few. Redheaded Slut, Lemon Drop, etc. Whatever. The girls you want long term relationships with will shoot tequila or BIB whiskey, or sip classier stuff.

Tequila is a whole new world. 3 types; blanco/plata (unaged, clear), reposado (minimally aged, pale brown), anejo (aged, brown).
STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM CUERVO GOLD. It's shitty tequila with caramel food coloring added.
Hussong's is good value for money.
Higher end Sauza isn't bad; absolutely fine for mixing, some are sippable.
Learn what NoM codes are; read your labels. This can help steer you away from private label special bottlings of cuervo gold. Expect decent bottles to start at $20 for plata, $25 for reposado, $35 for anejo.
A good anejo can be just as complex as a good whiskey.

There are good rums; there are more meme rums. Cute bottle? Assume meme.
