You want as hard a wood as possible, and a good shape / design. Lignum vitae chopsticks are nice. IMO they should be unstained and unvarnished, just cut, polished, and oiled wood, nothing else. I got a big set of them from some Chinese company, and while I can't 100% confirm their authenticity, they are noticeably harder than my others, are attractive if a bit plain, and work well for me.

They were actually Ebony not Lignum Vitae, I wasn't able to find any in Lignum Vitae (though I'm still considering commissioning some): https://www.etsy.com/listing/253701788

I bet you can find them cheaper somewhere else, since like I said they're shipped from China. Wouldn't be surprised to see a better listing on Alibaba. I got the 9" Japanese style because I like the smaller tips, but I'd have preferred 10" with the smaller tips if it was available. No complaints, they're great so far.

Can anyone recommend some thick cooking chopsticks that aren't going to cut into softer stuff like tamagoyaki or tofu

>> No.15956132

>>15954651
If you want “not disposable” chopsticks with “texture” at the end, then your best bet is to go with Korean metal chopsticks that have ridges/knurling toward the tips.

You aren’t really going to find grippy/textured Japanese chopsticks unless you buy literal toddler training-chopsticks, or the metal-with-insulated-plastic-handle frying chopsticks.

If you're okay with handwashing fiberglass, you can get a set of these for really cheap. I don't want to look up the price as they were a gift, but they're insanely comfy to hold and grip things great.

These aren't the kind you can grill with obviously.

In the entirety of human history I don't think that a good point has ever been topped off with an ellipsis. Depending on the exact composition of that stainless steel it's possible that cast iron would be lighter. Not in any practical sense though, they'd be damn near identical.

Because they're titanium and not either of the metals the guy I'm replying to was talking about. He posted stainless steel and mentioned cast iron. >> No.15960376

Doubtful.
Cast iron is likely to be larger diameter, more material for a given length.

>> No.15960417

>>15960376
Generally speaking when people make comparisons like this it's implied that the dimensions remain the same. Why would those chopsticks need to be thicker if made out of cast iron? They're not undergoing significant stress so unless there are casting quirks with items that thin I don't see a point.

>how you like yours
A lot. The matte finish of the metal gives it just enough ‘grip’ without having to be ridged or knurled like most metal chopsticks.
For fun I just threw them on my kitchen scale to compare.
The titanium pair is 14g. My standard pair of stainless Japanese frying chopsticks are 41g. A pair of the faux-ivory (resin) ones I have are 26g.
Of course they still weigh more than bamboo, but that’s simply because bamboo is bamboo.
>who they're from
I doubt it matters; when you look up titanium chopsticks on Amazon, it seems like they all come from the same few factories in China, and they’ll just stamp whatever “brand” you want on it. Except for the name on it, it’s mostly the same chopsticks in an identical metal container with tethered silicone ‘stopper’, and they’re all around $15 give or take.
I see some for a few bucks cheaper without the metal container, but I think it would be silly to not have that.
Mine look identical to this but have different ‘branding’.

>> No.15960462

>>15960417
>Why would those chopsticks need to be thicker
Practicalities of the casting process.
Stainless chopsticks can basically be skewers; cast iron will need a bit more of a taper.

>> No.15960485

>>15960462
This would likely explain why cast iron chopsticks don’t really exist outside the hypothetical in this thread; at least not in any meaningful quantity.

>> No.15960528

>>15960485
Yeah; cast iron chopsticks would make a decorative piece, not a functional object.
They're gonna be big around, like cooking chopsticks, but the thermal conductivity would be inconvenient for dunking in 400f oil.

They're gonna sit in the trophy case, if they exist at all.

why is japanese cuisine so hilariously bad?
the main staple dish of nipponland is sushi which is literally just fish on rice
their curry is just watered soup
ramen is just inferior version of authentic Chinese noodles
even instant noodles is taiwanese (Chinese) and not from japan

why could the nips not make a satisfactory cuisine?
