Going to Tennessee next month. I've been told to try the barbecue but is there anything else I should try? I live pretty far north in the US and have never really had southern food. I don't want to feel like I need a coronary all week though.

I'm not crazy about most southern food since as someone already mentioned it's all heavy and boring. But deep fried catfish is one of my weaknesses. Good quality tartar sauce to go with it is a must for me.

Nashville hot chicken is a must, memphis bbq kinda sucks. Tbh tennessee bbq isnt as good as the surrounding states. but their chicken and whiskey game is on point. you could skip the roadside bbq shacks and all you'll be missing out on is mayo slaw on a carolina sandwhich. nashville chicken/culinary is kinda poppin tho so you can go to some world famous spots there or experience some good southern style fine dining

prince's hot chicken (the OG and best)
once upon a time in france (classic french bistro so not southern but it's the best new restaurant)
nashville biscuit house for breakfast
peg leg porker

there are a lot of new restaurants that get by on a gimmick or location but actually suck so try to get some local opinions first, just ask somebody that looks normal they'll be nice.
