homemade is a million times better as long as you grilled the pineapple first and the right hot sauce is added post cooking. biggest wildcard ks if you use tomato sauce or a bechamel/cheese sauce. i used thinly sliced fried SPAM once and it was awesome. cracked black pepper is another thing commonly missing from chain hawaiian pies.
