>what rye would you recommend for a guy that absolutely love smoky Islays?
Kind of a weird question since rye is completely different than peated Scotch. That being said I would recommend Old Forester Rye, it has 20% malted barley in the mashbill and is an excellent affordable whiskey. I like it way better than all of the 95% rye MGP stuff like Bulleit, Dickel, etc. but those can give you a real good sense of a pure rye flavor. You may also want to try High West Campfire; a blend of bourbon, rye, and peated scotch. It's a pretty good and unique whiskey but it took me awhile to finish the bottle because I would rarely be in the mood to drink it. Also at $60 there are tons of preferable options.

I'll allow it for crazy strong shit like 65% ABV but below that nope. It's more flavorful if you don't and you're a weak little bitch if you can't enjoy, say, A'Bunadh neat.
>but muh opening up the flavor
It's causing guaiacol to float to the top, where it is quickly consumed, leaving the rest of the dram less flavorful.
You know what causes the flavor to open up in your mouth? Saliva. Yes, really. If you're taking small enough of sips, your saliva will dilute the whiskey in your mouth enough to cause the same flavor "opening up" or whatever broscience term you want to call it to occur in your mouth.
Thus, dilution via saliva is superior to dilution via water, which makes guaiacol float to the top of the dram, which is NOT desirable.

How did you come to the conclusion that the guaiacol is depleted on the first sip in a diluted dram? The Swedish chemists that discovered the interplay of guaiacol, h20, and ethanol in whisky have shown that guaiacol moves closer to the surface of the dram with dilution, but it's not like it's some slick of oil floating on top. They've also shown that those three components are not in perfect solution whether water is added or not, so it's not like you have uniform dispersion of guaiacol in undiluted whisky anyway.

It is tasty, just not quite as complex as I had hoped. Honestly wanted more sherry, so far I only got a little chocolate and a toasted walnut, got some bacon at the beginning, but not since. When I pour, I pour quite little so that I dont get too bored too quickly or leave it overnight(didnt change much). it did hold up really well with water, diluted by 30-40%, but didnt bring out anything new.

I just finished my 6 week build of a home wine cellar. 6 feet below grade in Maine. The walls and ceiling (and door) are massively insulated (walls are US R-43/ Metric R-8.5, and the ceiling is US R-51 / Metric R-9). Floor is uninsulated, and should naturally regulate the inside temperature to match the temperature of the soil at 6 feet of depth.

Currently: 278 bottles of wine (racking for up to 456 currently), 73 bottles of SMSW, 38 bottles of Cognac/Armagnac, and a few dozen cork and cage beers (not quite visible on the left behind the Whiskey rack) and other odds and ends.

As far as I can tell this tequila is owned by a white couple and has hopped distilleries 5 times at this point. Not the greatest pedigree but I tried to keep an open mind.

Blanco, Reposado, Anejo: They're all good. Nothing amazing like Fortaleza or G4 but respectable.
Diablo Blanco: This one is awesome! More tequilas should come in at this ABV. This makes me want to try the G4 high proof.
Extra Anejo: It's shitbutt. It was the most expensive but easily the worst. It tastes very woody, but not oaky you normally associate with aged spirits, more like gnawing on a twig. I don't know if it's additives or what, but hard pass.

Interesting. The last time I had Uigeadail was awhile ago but I don't remember it being overly red or dark from sherry. It seems like people assume Ardbeg is uncolored but nowhere on their packaging does it say natural color. Maybe the assumption that it's uncolored is because Ardbeg 10 is so light? I'm not saying I think it's colored but it's possible. As for wet casks, Uigeadail didn't really strike me as a big offender in that respect, I mean you yourself said you wanted more sherry from it although I think it has a pretty prominent sherry note. Have you ever had Kilchoman Sanaig? If any Scotch struck me as coming from a wet cask it's Sanaig; it says natural color on the bottle but it's super dark red for a young NAS whisky. I believe Sanaig uses wet casks based on its flavor as well. I think Bowmore 15 uses wet sherry casks as well; I base that on taste more than color because it's dark as fuck but it definitely is colored.

I definitely want to try more peated+sherried I'm hoping to find a Kilkerran 8 57.1 in the next year or so since so far my only Campletown is Glen Scotia Victoriana, but thats probably not going to be coming around here in any likelyhood, so Spey Fumare may be my next purchase if its still there, even if its not for sure sherried as it was only $50 and the hype seems to be creeping on that disterilly lately.

The 'A' batches are the hottest of the 3 from what I understand. I've only had the b520 and the c920 and prefer the former for my palette, see >>15918093.

Decided to give 4 roses another shot and purchased the single barrel ($74...). OGD 114 is a lot better. Just something about the finish that is off putting.

Cognac and Armagnac are brandies.
Armagnac is typically more flavorful than Cognac because it is only distilled once whereas Cognac is distilled twice.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask is a perfect introduction to peat. The peat is quite present but doesn't overwhelm the oak, which is nicely balanced with the peat.
Much better for a noob than something with almost zero peat (Johnnie Walker), something overwhelmingly peated (Laphroaig 10/Ardbeg 10/Lagavulin 16) or something that tastes like shit (Talisker 10).

Store run - Bowman Brothers small batch, OGD 114, Rittenhouse, Uncle Nearest.

Found a liquor store that does tastings, shit is great. With memevid and bars being ridiculous it's hard to try new stuff, and to buy bottles more than daily drinking cheap range and not really like them sucks. Store tastings made me dodge some duds I have been eyeing for awhile, and even turned me onto stuff I wouldn't have gone for before. Seems to be some subjectivity and a lot of shilling + blind brand loyalty in whiskey, no matter your research you can't beat try before you buy.
