You could say that most countries' respective cuisines were based around what people had in large amounts at the time, its not like your average peasant in the middle ages was living on much more than grains. Many European countries have distinctive types of cheese and large varieties, though I wouldn't really put those countries as having particularly good fruit or dairy any more than France, Italy, Spain and so on. If there's any point at which British cuisine had a particularly working class angle you could certainly argue during the first half of the 20th century when two world wars and the rationing alongside them prompted large use of offal which many today find gross (especially younger people).

Otherwise whilst there is undeniably a degree of simplicity in British cuisine, I do think the simplicity can be deceiving at times, some dishes can be more complex than they look at first glance.

Also the UK isn't the laughing stock of the Anglophone world, no country is outside of the many jibes and jokes specific to each, which are almost always light-hearted. Each country is relatively far richer than most of the world and particularly stable. The UK in particular owes a large part of its economy to how stable it is for financial services. And whilst many want to expatriate from the country, so too do many Americans, Australians and Canadians want to come here. I'm not saying the UK is anything extraordinary and it has many bad points, but I think you've gotten an unduly poor image of the country in this regard. And lazy cooks are everywhere - surely you can't deny that? I don't deny feeling like one of the few people that are interested in cooking around these parts but at least from what international students have shown and the numerous hostels in other countries, foreigners don't seem to care much either and are happy to live on cup noodles like many here do.
